But alas such is the state of the scene maybe it will get a boost in 20 years when all the servers get shut down for all this new online based consoles. Eitherway I still pump out some new wii homebrew stuff from time to time. Current working on updating NA but you can see my newer stuff on my wiibrew profile. have a good day. :)

I have a lot of great memories here, I remember coming here almost everyday after school to see what the latest homebrew or hack was going on with the wii. l still had dial up so i had to download every homebrew app using a 56k connection, it took forever! Hell, i remember when Arikado was still just a moderator. Anyways, I still have my wii, It gathers dust now a days, but sometimes I play some Super Mario Galaxy. I doubt anyone is going to see this post but hey, I still love my wii and this forum is a blast from the past for me. Hope everyone is doing well.

Wii Love Nintendo!

-Aujakev
Kevin

Fail0verflow have gotten Linux on PS4

Marcan made a blog post a few days ago that I just read, about Linux running on PlayStation 4. I think it's very interesting that the PS4 could potentially be used as a Steam machine, or with emulators as demonstrated in the video. Unlike the Wii U, the PS4 is a lot closer to a traditional PC but it's just different enough to be a challenge when porting Linux. Here's a link to the post: [fail0verflow.com]

Brawl in my wii it rendered them unplayable. I tried removing all of the unauthorized software like the homebrew channel and I ordered a new copy of each game. I put both of them in my wii and it rendered it unplayable again. Does anyone know specifically what the causes are of it doing that and if there is something I can do to make it stop rendering my games? Thanks!

Wii U Transfer Tool doesn't finish

I'm asking this here because I have some homebrew on my Wii and I don't know if any of that might be causing my problems.

I've been trying for over a week to get the Wii U Transfer Tool to work on my Wii. I followed the instructions and did the setup on the Wii U first, but the tool on the Wii hasn't been able to finish. I asked over on the official Nintendo support forums, but I obviously couldn't give every detail of what I did.

So I have the Homebrew Channel on my Wii. I forget the method of which I got homebrew on my system to begin with, but it was probably through the Smash Bros. exploit. I also managed to get the Gecko launcher set up so that it could launch channels with Ocarina cheat codes. I forget the exact steps. It's been a long time. Those steps might not even be necessary anymore for all I know. Anyway, I also had StartPatch 4.1 installed, with the patch to disable update checks.

With all that said, I started off with System Menu 4.1. First thing I did was open StartPatch and removed the update check patch. I tried several times to update to System Menu 4.3 using the official method, but it kept failing. The bar didn't even move a bit before it failed, each time. So I opened up DOP-Mii and used that to upgrade to 4.3, as well as upgrade the Shop Channel.

Both seemed to install fine. The Wii Shop Channel works perfectly, no problems. I downloaded the Wii U Transfer Tool without an issue. I start it up, hit Next twice, it connects to the internet to see if the process can continue. It usually succeeds on that stage, though it does occasionally throw an error. Then it loads the data off of the SD card, and ultimately it gets to the part where it has to connect to one of Nintendo's servers in order to receive some data to complete the transfer. This is the stage at which it always fails.

The errors at this stage all seem to be network related, and most related to the Wii Shop itself. Which I find odd, because the Wii Shop Channel works just fine (for the most part), but the Wii U Transfer Tool can't connect to it for some reason.

Is there any chance an IOS needs updated that didn't manage to get updated during the DOP-Mii upgrades? Could it be the presence of the homebrew itself that's causing it to fail somehow? Or is it really an issue with Nintendo's servers? I know Club Nintendo has a high traffic warning on the top of the page, but I don't know if that's related to my problem at all.

Hardly any posts were made this year in any of the boards - It's creepy and kind of depressing.

The Wii Homebrew scene needs some new life put back into it. Fresh new ideas, new blood, new discussion. If I knew how to code, I would for the sake of keeping the scene alive. I remember when the prospect of Wii Homebrew at all was new an exciting - we finally had something we could DO SOMETHING with our edits to. For the first and maybe the last time, this was OUR console. But... there's just nothing now. I may not have been a vocal member of the community until today, but it's just upsetting to see it fall so far into the ether.

We need to come up with things to breathe some life back into this place.
This place sure brings back memories.

Okay, so I used to post here several years ago; just over 4 years ago actually. I've grown up a lot in those 4 years, I can assure you. I honestly can't believe the way I acted, talked, typed, whatever, back then. I read through the old announcements, and was absolutely wowed by the fact that Arikado has been gone for over 18 months; I remember talking to him about the classes he was taking as a senior in high school.

I remember when DrLucky, ninjafish1991, and I would have all kinds of inane discussions on the offtopic section.....

But that's not the only reason I'm here posting about forum nostalgia.

When I was an active member, I had little to no knowledge of OOP, having only done any amount of work in BASIC, and having only taught myself this due to being bored in the latter half of junior high. I am a student in the Programming and Web Development shop at my local trade school, and we have a focus on Ruby on Rails for web servers, and C# as the main OOP language.

I'm currently working on a top-down RPG with three others that is similar to the old Legend of Zelda games, particularly Four Swords Adventures, but with the implementation of semi-random dungeons, an inventory system, weapon classes, sprite customizations, and more. We expect to have a working build with combat, travel from the hub to the dungeon and back, character loading/saving, and at least basic inventory management by the end of June. If anyone expresses interest in it, I'll make it publicly available. My personal role in the development is that of the animations, the sprites, and the weapon handlers.

To have thought that I would be this far along in such a comparatively short amount of time is just mind-boggling to me, even today.
To look back a few years and look at myself struggling to get text to output to a screen, well, it makes me laugh. It makes me realize that crazy things can happen, and will happen, and that you just have to let them happen, because it's probably not going to affect you in too negative of a fashion to outweigh the positives.

Not that anyone cares on this particular facet either, but I've also gone from making computer cases out of cardboard because I put all of my money into the components, to fitting an entire MiniITX gaming PC into an original Xbox, simply because I was bored with my current case. 80mm radiator bolted to the top half of the shell, with a single fan on top to serve as a pull, the push is supplied by the GPU that is secured just below it (Radeon HD 7970 Toxxic 6GB).

Ah, there's that old trait of mine. Telling everyone everything. This was a functional example, however, so I can let it slide as it were.

So, in conclusion, I loved my time here, left for reasons even I can't remember, went to school for the years in the interim, learned programming guud, made strides in the hardware end of things as well, and now I nostalgia'd all over when someone talked about running the Homebrew channel on their Wii U.

Arkytal

formerly z400100500 (to those of you who may remember me as z-numbers, the entire, uncut version is z4001005002600260294123711514268 )

Re: Looking for a USB Gecko

To build your own, you'd probably need a decent knowledge of electronics (you'd need to be able to read the schematics, understand them, find the components, put them together correctly [includes soldering]).

As for NEEK, it's main purpose is using the SD card or a USB device as the Wii's "NAND" (it stands for "NAND and ES Emulation Kit"), but it does also have features involving debug logging to the SD card/USB device. The obvious downside of this is that it means you run something, debug output gets logged to SD card, you turn off the Wii, put the SD card into your computer, read the log etc. rather than getting live output. (For live output, I believe you require a USB gecko).

Seeing as this is the case, you can just manually log stuff to the SD card in your program.

BTW, NEEK isn't really supported here, as it can be used for warez. Given the subject of your question, I think it's OK, but just for future reference.

I vaguely remember reading that it was some type of developmental sandbox for the Wii.

Also I remember reading on WiiBrew that you could build you're own USB Gecko. How hard would that be and would it be easier than trying to find a Gecko for sale?

Help? PAL GC-disc read errors on PAL Wii

My PAL Wii started to make annoying noise when spinning discs. After reading that a noisy Wii's disc drive may scratch a disc, out of fear of it, my Wii hasn't been in use for few years a lot at all. In these years, I've tried the disc reader a few times, and maybe saw new scratches on the discs.

And the weird thing and my main point of posting this is, that some time later after it started to behave noisy, my Wii started to have disc read errors with PAL GC discs usually in few minutes or seconds after launching, but not with NTSC-J GC discs nor Wii discs of any region. At least of the ones I've used. All my PAL GC discs are about as scratchy as the NTSC-J ones, but one on them is scratchier. That one doesn't work (noticeably) better or worse than other PAL GC discs on my Wii.
But on some periods of not using the disc drive for a few weeks, then starting to use it again, this happened sometimes: the disc read errors tended to occur later, maybe hour or two or few after launching, if at all. And then when its using has again become more frequent, also the disc read errors started to come in few minutes again.

All those discs work fine on another PAL Wii I've been using. No annoying noise and no disc read errors at all, but once with Brawl.

On both Wiis, I've used Gecko OS homebrew program to run NTSC-J discs.

That way when I get around to some of the more complicated stuff, I have it available rather than having to track through the usual dead links looking for one. If I have to resort to not using a Gecko for later projects, is there some type of software that I can use with a Bootmii dump to recreate a Wii that I can use as a development sandbox on a PC?
