Work together: Let's change (fix) our forum!

When the WiiBrew Forums you're reading this on were created, they were created as the second WiiBrew Forums. The original forums had a number of problems with them, the foremost being illegal content and downright stupidity from users. These forums were launched as a masters cleanse, bringing a new set of rules to fix the old problems and limiting the advising staff to only the most knowledgeable people in order to prevent "moderation games".

The new forums (that you're reading now) have a very strict set of rules and try to eliminate nonconstructive discussions whenever possible. This has greatly improved the overall quality of the forum since people are only here to work. A vast number of accomplishments have been made in the Coding and Reverse Engineering boards which have actually affected Wii Homebrew as a whole. The Getting Started, Homebrew General, Homebrew Applications, and FixMii boards have helped literally several thousand users with unique dilemmas. All of this has been accomplished in the almost 2 years this forum has existed.

However, times change, and so do people. Lately users of our own forum have called it unfair, inflammatory, and derogatory.

As an administrator of the forums, I take these comments very seriously. I want to promote friendly community that will solve any problem you have, so long as it is not for illegal purposes. Even if you do break a rule, I strongly believe in second (and third) chances. Even then, you are more likely to lose a few forum privileges then to be completely banned from the forum. If at all possible, I really would like to avoid banning people as much as possible. Like all people, I'm not perfect, I do occasionally make a mistake (at which point you need to remember to call me out on it) but I think I do a pretty good job overall.

Instead, the negative comments seem to stem from the fact that people don't like strict and solely constructive discussions. I understand that we're all not coders/hackers, but there is no need for anyone to post a topic about a youtube video we think is funny. (Isn't that what facebook is for?) People don't like having their comments deleted just because they posted something ridiculous entirely for "shits and giggles". Overall, I think the forum is pretty lenient with such behavior despite the pro-constructive mindset that is preached.

Despite that though, all of the administrators, moderators, and I do what we think is best for the forum following this manner. Yet, there is still a great too many users unhappy with how some part or some way our forum is run. In this post, I encourage you to reply by voicing your concerns and displeasure so that we may work to correct it.

Beyond whether our forum is too strict, there is a great deal of other issues I'm concerned with that I would like to address in this post:

The reverse engineering board is very quiet, and also rather large. I'm considering turning it into two forums instead of four. One for hardware reverse engineering and the other for software reverse engineering.

Wii Linux is a growing topic of discussion among the internet (there is even a dedicated channel in #wiilinux on EFNET). However, it really only fits in Offtopic forum's criteria. Should we create a dedicated forum for it?

Many users feel that I'm the only active forum power, and that we should appoint a new, active, full forum moderator. I actually disagree with this as I have yet to see someone truly qualified and I believe the other people are more than active enough. But if you, the community, feels strongly otherwise then please voice your opinion.

This post was made because this forum is of a large importance to me and a great number of users. As such, when problems occur, we must work together to fix them. Since many people have made comments to me that problems exist, I feel it is necessary to have a community discussion. Similarly, I strongly encourage anyone who wants to to talk about additional problems they see and voice suggestions to improve our forum.

Thank you for listening, and all the best to everyone who chooses to respond and partake in this discussion.

Yeah, I tried but it doesn't seem phorum software will let me do that. I even considered rewarding the delete permission to people who I think are good members of this forum but it won't let me do that either (the permission lets you either delete any post made by anyone or you can't delete anything at all -_-)

Also, I want to thank everyone for being so patient and letting us all have a nice long discussion. I now plan to move forward with our agreed upon changes as soon as possible.

Those changes would be:
[*]A merging of the software sections on the reverse engineering board
[*]The creation of a WiiLinux forum

I have decided against appointing more global moderators. I think I'm active enough that it's not really a problem.

We also have two users that I would like to recommend get moved up to moderator status for the Getting Started forum:
[*]SifJar
[*]WaxyPumpkin72

In my eyes, these are two of the most dedicated users to the forum as a whole and the two most active people in the Getting Started forum. Consequently, the Getting Started forum is also filled with the most new posts and the most problems. I truly believe these two gentlemen are more then capable of addressing problems in there before I get around to them myself. If there are no objections to this request, and both users accept my request to them, I will make it happen as quickly as possible (assuming that I receive approval from the other members of the forum staff).

Re: Work together: Let's change (fix) our forum!

I certainly agree that we need a Wii-Linux forum. The guides out there aren't that wonderful, and as someone who has never used Linux before I would certainly appreciate an easy to find place to discuss it, and begin to comprehend it.

I think the majority of us agree that avatars have no place here. I feel they would distract from the down-to-business feel of the forum. I come here and start reading things and actually learn a thing or two... elsewhere you see flashy colors and signatures that alter the display of the forum altogether and it just makes for a bad experience. I think having the usernames to identify us is plenty enough.

As far as discussion of illegal things in certain situations... I think rather than trying to get support for them at the moment... why not simply let the mods differentiate between what is a perfectly rational and legal reason to use these things and what is not as they have been doing? I certainly can see how we're all giving Nintendo the middle finger with all this, and I feel the mods have done an excellent job of keeping Homebrew safe from legal repurcussions thus far. They know how to do their job, and they do it well, let's let them continue to do that without trying to pressure them into allowing things that just... maybe shouldn't be allowed.

There were multiple subjects so far in this thread which gained support by various people until Arikado stepped in with a rather blatent and seriously overlooked point (simply because the various people aren't mods and don't have to think like them). And this, like those points I feel is best left up to the mods.

I do like the idea of upping the size of the red letters because... well, it seems to avoid certain things in IRC when you point out to people who join that they should read !rules. So if you up the font size, and maybe (unless Phorum won't allow for this), put it down where people are typing their message, maybe just above it or something, that way they'll hopefully get the point and not even try, thus [theoretically] making the mods job at least a bit simpler.

Reverse Engineering Board should absolutely be converted into two instead of four, much simpler, and considering the lack of use it won't be very cluttered... hell you could merge it into one and it wouldn't get cluttered. Seriously though, two definitely sounds good.

And though I like scanffs' idea about the coding forum, since Phorum doesn't allow for that sort of thing, I would love to see a sticky with all sorts of great tutorial links inside.

I don't know how important a revamp of the HomeBrew Applications list on the wiki is, but definitely I could see reviving the featured HomeBrew section, and if I still had my capture card I would love to continue doing the HomeBrew Showcase videos.

These are my opinions for what they are worth, and I hope to see a few of these changes some time in the not so distant future. (the wii-linux thing in particular). Thanks for taking the time to read all this, I hope it was somewhat useful.

Re: Work together: Let's change (fix) our forum!

As a newb I am sure my comments caryy little weight but here are my 2 cents. I think the board is well moderated and I love the no piracy rules, it keeps the board clean and safe. I think admin is doing a fine job and though another admin would always be useful, if there is no one qualified with the spare time, then there is no one available to do the job. As for the hardware section I have been here 5 weeks and seen about 3 posts so perhaps it needs folded into another section. On the topic of the "Off Topic" I would like to say that if you are going to have an off topic area it should be allowed to have whatever in it so long as it does not break the rules. I had to remove a post there, even though there was nothing in the rules against what I had posted, and it was in off topic, but for some reason it was still deemed against the rules. Now I don't mind but the rules need updated to reflect this, admin should know what I am talking about, if not PM me and I will tell you. Thankfully Admin knew I did not do it intentionally or with malicous and I did not get any reprimand so I can say that I do not think that the admin takes things overally seriously, or at least not in my case he didn't. My next issues is the rigidity of the rules, I think there are instances in which someone has a legitimate issue, such as a bricked Wii and needs help, in which the discussion of borderline against the rules material needs to be discussed to resolve the person's issue. In these cases admin should consider allowing the conversation with some kind of mark next to it indicating it is specifically allowed due to legit reasons but would otherwise be banned so as not to encourage negative behavior. In other words there are times where the rules need to be flexible so long as admin can administrate the conversation, given he has the time. Though I understand the flipside, it can become a slippery slope, if allowed once it could spiral out of control. Well thats my 2 cents on that. I guess it comes down to admins opinion and available time, on whether or not the rules can be made more flexible in legit situations that border the edge of the rules. My last note is that overrall the board is welcoming to newbs but like anything could use work, some of my posts were ignored/not answered even though I know people knew the answers, so as a community I think we need to work on our social skills and help others, particularly newbs, better. Thats all I have to say. I know I have little experience here so take it for what its worth, but perhaps it would be benefical to get the viewpoint of someone other than a vet on this topic. Thanks for taking the time to read this long post. Have a good one. Merry Christmas.

Sincerely,
Elmoreas

I just think it looks so stupid. I mean, anyone with that crap in their sig just looks like an idiot, who has followed the exact same guide as everyone else, and hence has the exact same cIOS crap and warez loader crap as everyone else. Pretty much all of them have the exact same stuff in a different font, perhaps a different System Menu or something every now and again.

/rant
