Forum problems fixed; Arikado is leaving (16 replies)

On August 25th my inbox started blowing up with users e-mailing me that no one could post on the forums. Months prior to this the forum had also begun having a handful of issues with it's SMTP (mail) functionality. I'm pleased to announce that I've finally fixed both of these issues by spending several hours playing with the forum software. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by both of these issues.

This incident has reminded me how little free time is actually available to me so I have decided that I will no longer continue my role as a forum administrator here on the WiiBrew Forums. I am currently seeking an active moderator or respected member of the forums to replace my duties. Upon finding one I shall relinquish myself of Administrator status.

Due to recent forum outage and suddenness of the change up in forum administration I will leave this topic open for discussion for awhile.

Thank you again for your patience and support during the last several days.

E-Mail Verification Now Required for Forum Registration (no replies)

Do to a recent influx of spam generated by a single person under multiple accounts using fake e-mail addresses and due to some behind-the-scenes server maintenance I'm temporarily requiring newly registering forum members to activate their accounts via e-mail before they can post.

I'm not really a fan of doing this but it's the only choice I really have at the moment. I've tested the e-mail verification with Hotmail (Live), AOL, Yahoo, Verizon, and GMail e-mail services and it's worked just fine so far as the registration e-mail arrives almost instantly and only Hotmail placed it in the spam box

This will most likely be undone when our server maintenance is completed.

If you're trying to register for the forum and having problems, please e-mail me at: castlevania7689@yahoo.com for assistance.

Really really really st00pid members (16 replies)

I'm sure most of you like myself have noticed an influx and unbelievably st00pid members lately.

These new members post questions so stupid that they upset forum members. Forum members tend to respond to these stupid questions with long drawn out overly clear answers. Despite their generosity, said new st00pid forum member will reply a rude response and enrage said long-time overly helpful member. Furthermore, these st00pid newbies tend to make up their own rules to the forum and cite them as they please.

To give you a better picture of what I'm talking about, here are some recent posts by these new st00pid forum members (there are three other members who joined in the past several days not included in here because all of their posts have been deleted by the other admins and I) :

Quote:
davidcalman_32
Are you trying to pull a Sony? That's DEFINITELY not supported here.

Quote:
davidcalman_32
Anyone with korean wiis, go back to hangul.

Quote:
http://forum.wiibrew.org/read.php?24,49214
I remember reading somewhere that the Wii's dvd drive isn't designed to spin constantly, so if i play a dvd with Mplayer CE, can it fry the drive's motor?

Quote:
dylan1
What's the difference between homebrew and a dev studio if there is any?

In short, these people are trolls.

And surprise, surprise, all five of these members are being controlled by the same person. Apparently he/she/it doesn't realize there's something I can track besides the IP address.

If you see behavior similar to what I've described in this post from a new member, please report it immediately. Do not bother responding to it. Then, if they're not banned in 4-6 hours or sooner (we're pretty fast), consider that as a green light to respond to whatever it was you reported.

I'll leave this topic open for discussion for a bit ...

Forum Changes and Reorganization (13 replies)

Hello fellow Wiibrewers!

We will soon be putting a couple of organizational changes in to place on the forums.

Consolidation:
There are a huge number of forums, and so we're going to make a first attempt at consolidation. The "Homebrew Ideas & Suggestions" and "Homebrew Help & Questions" forums will be absorbed by the other two Homebrew forums. Initially, we will simply move all existing threads from the deprecated categories to the Homebrew General forum. However, the rules of the two remaining forums will change slightly.

1. Homebrew General will now contain topics discussing homebrew in general, non-existent homebrew (ideas, etc.), and help/questions for general homebrew topics (TP Hack, HBC, etc.).
2. Homebrew Applications will now contain topics discussing anything concerning existing homebrew applications--comments, announcements, and support for existing applications will all take place in this forum.

That is the extent of consolidation efforts. In addition to these changes, however, I would like to introduce....

FixMii Forum
Wiis can become "Bricked" for many reasons. Over the past few months, we've discovered the a number of different types of "bricks" and their causes. The practice of fixing bricks is of interest to many groups of people: Those with bricked Wiis, those studying Wii behavior, and those generally interested in helping people out.
What's more, "Bricked" Wiis are not normally supported by Nintendo, and they're not easy to create without using homebrew or hardware hacks in some way. In this way, they have a sort of unique status. The homebrew community has many tools at its disposal to modify the Wii's software configuration. This, combined with knowledge of the system itself, allows us to help many users fix their bricked, or otherwise malfunctioning Wiis.

For this purpose, we have decided to open a "FixMii" Forum--Where users can seek help for their bricked, misconfigured, or otherwise less-than-fully-functional Wiis.

Of course, some specific rules will apply to this forum. In order to keep the forum helpful and useful, threads in this forum should be restricted to problems which were caused by or can be fixed by homebrew methods. Since this distinction is not easily made by those seeking answers to their problems, this restriction will be lenient--Moderators will likely take care of quite a bit of cleanup :)

Anyway, that's all for now. Further details will be specified upon opening of the forum. Comments are enabled on this topic for now. This post will be edited and the thread closed when the changes have taken place. Further discussion at that point should take place in the feedback/support forum.

Welcome! (no replies)

Now that the forums are functional, I suppose it is necessary to have a formal note of opening.

Well, here it is:
Welcome to the Wiibrew Forums!

Introduction
As you might expect, this is a forum for discussion pertaining to Homebrew software, its development, and reverse engineering on the Nintendo Wii platform. With this in mind, we hope the forum will be a useful resource to Wii Homebrew users, developers, and hackers alike.

Rules
Currently, the forum is only in an early stage. There is no definitive set of rules or guidelines yet. Over the next few days, however, these things should begin to appear throughout the forums.
For now, we can merely try to give you a general idea of what the rules will look like:
* Practice good forum etiquette
* Do not post information pertaining to piracy, "backups," or any other topic of questionable legal status
* Try your best to make topics and posts in the correct section of the forums

What happened to the "old" forums?
The previous Wiibrew Forums weren't serving the needs of the whole Wiibrew community to the extent that we had hoped. There were a number of issues to overcome, and the decision was made to start fresh. This time, we hope to have a working solution to fit everyone's needs as well as is possible. Please note, however, that this forum is not to be thought of as a "continuation" of the last forum. This is a new and different forum that merely took the place of the previous Wiibrew Forums.

That aside, please enjoy your stay here. We appreciate your participation in the forums.

PS: Mail isn't working at the moment, so we are manually activating accounts. If your account doesn't work, try again later.
