System 4.0 Question

My Wii is currently 3.3u with the HBC installed. Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade to 4.0 or at least gain the functionality of using the SD card to run Wiiware without hurting my chances of using homebrew going forward?

It is my understanding that this can be done with Wainkoko's cIOS, but I'd rather not install that, I don't pirate games.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
