Angry Birds Star Wars - Wii System Update Needed?

Hello,

I recently purchased Angry Birds Star Wars for the Wii. When I insert the disc, it says I need to perform a system update to run the game (I'm currently at 4.3). However, I've read that updating will brick modded Wiis.

Is there a way to safely update the Wii system (through the Homebrew Channel?) so that it will play new releases?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thank you. :)
