dir* function wrapper (4 replies)

I'm still working on learning how to use the opendir/closedir/readdir/etc. functions (I know I've had plenty of time, I just keep putting it off), but a wrapper would be extremely helpful. It's not just for me either. Old apps that need to be recompiled for motion+ controllers sometimes require large amounts of code to be rewritten. If someone wrote a wrapper, only a couple of lines would need to be added. This would speed things up and reduce the chance of error.

I've tried to do this myself, but I am a rather poor coder and all my knowledge of C is self-taught, mainly through trial and error.

PS: Doing this will almost certainly lead to riches and glory. Or poverty and shame. You know what, forget I even mentioned this bit.

Fixing the vertical aim issue (3 replies)

I just bought a used wii recently and i was really excited about playing fps games with the wii controls. The first game i bought was red steel and i find this and other fps games unplayable because of the vertical aim issue. When I aim at the center of the screen the cursor is at the very bottom. I've researched this extensively and have found many people having the same problem and nobody with a solution. I only downloaded the homebrew channel and joined this forum to fix this problem (i'm a novice programmer). I've searched this forum to no avail. I think a calibration program would be very useful to a lot of people. I'm willing to develop this program my self but since i have no programming experience on the wii it would probably be easier if somebody else wrote it.

There are solutions out there to hook up the classic controller to a pc from mayflash using either usb or some wireless system which as far as I know is not Bluetooth since it requires a usb receiver to be plugged into the pc.
Ideally, I would like to have something that uses standard Bluetooth HID specifications and which has an internal battery as well as usb port for charging.
The problem is I have no idea how to do this :P

So here I am. If any of you hardware wizards could give me advice on how to do this and where to look to get something like this working. Or, if there's someone out there who likes the idea and knows his stuff and would like to help feel free to reply :)

Thanks for reading!

Toddtris graphics, etc (no replies)

Hi,

I have just released an update to my old toddtris game. I think it plays pretty well but I am no artist. If anyone would like to get involved in working on a new look and feel I'd be very pleased to hear from you.

Simple changes to the graphics are trivial - just change the images in the 'images' directory. Code changes would be required to do anything more. I'm happy to help with that or if you have coding skills feel free to hack away.

At the moment the game uses Grrlib, but it has been written to make swapping in a different view layer simple. I've written up a design doc for the code which is linked from the wiibrew page in case anyone wants to work on the code.

Any other contributions to the game in general would also be welcome.

Thanks,

Toddy

Overclock the Wii? (3 replies)

Hello.
I know that there has been experiments to get MIOS to run at 1.5x (i.e. 'Wii mode speed') and take advantage of the speed the Wii can produce. As opposed to benefitting from the power and maintaining the accurate game speed, the game speed is 1.5x.

I am curious to know if there is a possibility that the Wii for 'Wii mode' can be overclocked.
I heard that the Wii is synced to the speed it is set to, and that overclocking disturbs this sync, but I was curious to know if it would be at all possible to increase the CPU and GPU, and perhaps even RAM clock speed like one would do with a PC.
It would be great to get some extra power for choppy games and some homebrews in general, as well as general performance :)

Thanks.

Anyone interested in a simple program to use your Wiimotes as controllers on the PC? (1 reply)

So some time ago I made a simple program for myself which enables you to use your Wiimotes as controllers on the PC.

Basically it passes the input which the PC receives from a Wiimote via BlueTooth to a virtual joypad using ParallelPortJoystick (http://ppjoy.bossstation.dnsalias.org/)

You then have a fully functioning gamepad with various axes, buttons and POV, depending on the extension connected to the Wiimote (supporting Wiimote alone with the X/Y/Z acceleration as joystick axes, Classic controller, Nunchuck and the Guitar Hero guitar controller). Here's a screenshot of the game controller settings:

The program is very easy to use and doesn't have to be configured like a lot of other programs out there.

Here's a screenshot of my program:

So if anyone is interested, i can write a little guide how to use it (it's really very simple) and upload the program (it's not bigger than 100KB).

It's written in C# (so Windows only) and I am using "WiimoteLib" (http://www.wiimotelib.org/) for communication with the Wiimote.

I would love to get some feedback and probably be able to improve it and make it even better / simpler.

Oh and anyone thinks this might be againts some copyright (of the guys who made PPJoy or the WiimoteLib of from Nintendo) please tell me, that's why i haven't uploaded the program yet.

Mod to darken the screen? (6 replies)

So my Wii has the component cable issue that I've found some other people have, where the whites are just too damn bright. And of course during a game, pressing the Home button (which darkens the screen) actually makes it look just fine.

I've been pondering the possibility of a mod that permanently darkens the screen. It seems simple enough, but would it be possible to keep this feature running during games? It is seriously nearly impossible to fly in Skyward Sword due to the clouds.

Oh, and one note: NO, adjusting the contrast or brightness on my TV will not work. This is an issue with the Wii itself that some TVs have when connected via component.

So, what do you all think?

This seems like a stupid question, and if someone would have to go through alot of trouble for this, I'm honestly saying it isn't worth it. I was just wondering. :)

Homebrew WiiU from a Wii and android (1 reply)

Not sure if this has been brought up yet, did do a check on google and it didnt come up.

Basically the idea goes like this:
start app
init networking
connect phone to wii (wifi, maybe possible by tethering directly to device to reduce lag???)
send sprites to be displayed on second screen to phone via connection
send an xml file which states the properties and behaviours of sprites (animation, physics, user interactions)
phone can send back data of interactions (like button presses, text etc.)

essentially, with a tablet like the new nexus 7 and a classic controller pro we could essentially create an underpowered WiiU and because the android device would have a built in processor it shouldnt affect the wiis performance, in fact we could have a 3D view on the device and 2D on the tv.

This idea will take quite a while to build, we need to an app for the phone and the wii, we also need to take into account latency by using ping to delay the rendering onscreen. The android app will be harder to code since it will essentially be a game engine that is configured on the fly.

What do you guys think of this, it would be awesome to have this running before the WiiU is out its just a matter of whether or not its feasible?

Wolf4SDL/mods on the Wii? (no replies)

I remember seeing an app on PSP-Hacks of a Wolf3D engine ported to the PSP, you still need the game files to play the game however. That's a bit like what I'm suggesting here...

I'm a Wolfenstein 3D modder, love this new Wolf4SDL code as it's so easy to implement things like High-Res graphics, floor/ceiling textures, the more advanced stuff. I'm not much of a good coder or programmer despite making Wolf3D mods for the past 10 years, I mostly do the graphic work, music editing, mapping, and a very small bit of basic coding with C++/Dev-C++.

Below are video links to 2 of my projects released with modified Wolf4SDL engines. If anyone think they'd be fun to play on the Wii, I don't mind sending the source codes your way. :)

The Blazer Forces: Frayed
[www.youtube.com]

Krucible: Insanitarium
[www.youtube.com]

So it would be possible to register the Wii on my phone as a Bluetooth headset as an audio system in your car. So I could hear on the terrace with my cell phone MP3 player music. There is no Wifi available. I can not imagine that I am the first who came up with this idea. greetings ...

Question: X68000 open source emulator to Wii? (1 reply)

So I discovered there was an open source X68000 emulator around when researching some games today, and wondered if it would be possible to port a Wii emu from it or if it's relying too heavily on Windows?

For those who are not familiar, X68000 is a Japanese only computer system that boasted some incredible arcade ports and exclusive games, including Akumajo Dracula (which was recently released on the Playstation as Castlevania Chronicles), Nemesis 90, Salamander, Parodius, Gradius I & II, Fantasy Zone, Cotton, Thunder Force 2, R-Type, Arkanoid, Final Fight, Street Fighter 2, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury Special, Strider, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Alien Syndrome, Arcus Odyssey, Arcus 2, Bonanza Bros., New Zealand Story, Valis, Populous, Bosconian, Prince of Persia, Rygar, Sim City, Space Harrier, Super Hang-On, Ultima 5, Xak, Xenon 2, Ys & 3 as well as a countless other exclusive games. Recently there has been a few games translated into English with more to come very soon, so having it playable on the Wii would be great.

The source to the emulator XM6 can be found here:

Fixed link. --bg4545
