I used the lovely builds that that allow for screenshots of each game and Wii U pro controller support. While browsing the games I find it will crash (just freezes up) from time to time. Not all the time, but enough for it to be a nuisance. I searched the forums and google, but have not been able to find a thread or anything that helps. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Is there any other info I should provide that might be helpful?

PS I am also having another slight problem with the screenshots. Certain images show up as grey and glitchy looking. I am using the set of snaps from emumovies.
Wii U not functioning? (no replies)

So I've had a Wii U for about ten months now, and I've had the HomeBrew Channel installed for about eight. It has been functioning great, not a single issue! Until I visit my parent's to watch the house for the week, and when they return, my brother boots up his brand new Wii U after we all get off mine, having just played Nintendo Land. About thirty minutes later, I turn on mine, and.. the Quick Launch Menu is unresponsive. Weird. No touchscreen, no analog, no button feedback at all. Okay, so I turn it off, and turn it on via the console. The Wii U GamePad doesn't function on the mainscreen, and I have to use a Wii Remote to access a game, but when I do, the GamePad functions fine, except for the touchscreen.

I guess my question is, could this issue have been a problem with the HomeBrew Channel? Also, how can I remove the channel from the Wii Menu and leave minimal traces of it being there?

LetterBomb working? (1 reply)

GUYS! I SWEAR I SAW A LETTER BOMB LETTER IN MY MAIL ON MY WII LOADER ON MY WII U!! I swear guys, I swear. I did what you would normally do with LetterBomb for your Wii, I found my MAC Address from the Settings app in my Wii U menu. When I finally decided to put in my SD Card, I went into the Mail and went directly to yesterday. There was nothing. When I went back to today, I first saw a red letter and then a white letter pop over it. After that, i could still see the SD card logo on top, but I couldn't see the letter itself, I could only see the white letter. I did not want to damage my beloved Wii U so I just took out the SD card, and turned off my Wii. Please test this for me!

Any idea what could cause this, and is there a (relatively safe) workaround?

Wii Fit Plus semi-bricked my vWii! Please help... (17 replies)

I had never a problem with my Wii U until the day I tried Wii Fit Plus. After that day, when I try to boot vWii,the message displayed says that the system files are corrupted.

The "system files are corrupted" problem started as soon as my girlfriend asked me to live with me and to start exercising with Wii Fit Plus and her Balance Board using my Wii U.

I copied hers save file to an SD card and copied it to my vWii. And this was the begining to my problems.

Of course, the save file was not recognizable as Wii Fit Plus uses the Miis that are stored to Wii's nand.

I googled the problem and I have to say that this is a common bug that many people have experienced in the past using Wii Fit from their Wiis.

Unfortunately, none has found a definite solution and I think that I may be the first one that has a semi-brick using vWii with this bug.

- I deleted the Wii Fit Plus save file both from system memory and SD card.

- I deleted some SD card saves that MIGHT be corrupted.

- I tried to boot vWii without the SD card inserted.

- There were some rumours that if you let the system on for a whole night in "The system files are corrupted" screen,Nintendo does an online check and the system downloads the missing/corrupted files again.

Unfortunately,NOTHING works. (And yes,I have the latest official firmware 4.0.0E if I remember correctly.)

So,no NAND backup restore option for vWii yet and no Format option either (at least for vWii only,I do not want to format my Wii U too) , so what can I do?

I assume that Wii Fit Plus uses some specific IOS that has been corrupted. But which IOS? And most importantly, how can I restore it (assuming my bold theory is correct)?

Is there any viable solution please?

EDIT: I made a VERY interesting discovery I forgot to mention.

The "System files are corrupted" screen appears the first time I boot vWii ONLY.

(By using the quick vWii method by holding B button in Wii U's start up screen , or by selecting the Wii channel.)

I manage to boot vWii by using the maintenance mode and after that I load a Channel (any one). When I exit the Channel, System Menu loads 100% perfectly all the time.

The only exception is when I try to return to System Menu from HBC. Hmm...

Anyway, this means that the problem is there only the first time the console boots vWii.

I hope that this may be useful...

Installing vWii Homebrew on WiiU 4.0 (GUIDE) And What to Do/Expect Afterwards (10 replies)

If an admin or mod reads and likes this, please pm me. I need your confirmation on whether or not I can link a certain homebrew application(s) capable of dumping NAND and mode keys while we wait for bootmii support

*THIS IS A VERY ROUGH POST AND WORK IN PROGRESS. I WILL FORMAT/OPTIMIZE IT LATER.*

Hello! If you are reading this guide, chances are there is some step along the way of installing Homebrew on your WiiU that has stumped you. This is a comprehensive guide to the methods I took to install Homebrew, and a few applications. It will be updated accordingly as I experience more errors.

This is more of a congregation of links and explanations of said links than a fully fledged guide.

*NOTE* I am not liable for any bricks this may cause. All homebrew is done at your own risk.

=====================================================================================

Contents:

A] Installing Homebrew on WiiU 4.0
>I. Downloading Required files
>II. Exploit
>III. What Happened to Bootmii?

B] Installing applications
>I. NAND Dump Without Bootmii ADMIN/MODERATOR CONFIRMATION REQUESTED
>II. Homebrew Browser
>III. Importing/Downloading Other Hombrew Applications

C] Supplementary Information
>I. Known Bugs
>II. Unresolved Issues
>III. Final reading

D] To be added later, likely as A]
(An overview of WiiU update 4.0, whether it's worth updating to, and important threads that address issues not covered here)

=========================THREAD VERSION 0.5=========================

A] Installing Homebrew
>I. Downloading Required Files
If you are already familiar with how to complete the initial steps of Homebrew, or cannot locate Hackmii, here is the download. [bootmii.org]

Read and follow steps 1-4 here, subbing the exploits for those in step II. [www.wiibrew.org] or alternatively, http://tinyurl.com/setuphb This is the same link as the previous, but shortened and good for linking to friends.

Ignore the portion about Bootmii, see step III.

>II. Exploit
Only the exploits listed here are currently working for vWii: [wiiubrew.org]

I personally recommend one of the Lego Games, as they are likely to be cheaper (about $15 at Gamestop) than Brawl. I used Lego Batman for this installation. Make sure not to grab the sequel of the Lego game (e.g. Lego Batman 2) unless there is an exploit for that specific game.

Follow their respective guide(s) by clicking their link(s). Make sure you use an SD card and not an SDHC card, as the Wii does not support SDHC for wii saves. [wiibrew.org] is a jumping off point for seeing if your SD card is supported, however the page was intended for Wii and not vWii so results will likely be mixed.

I installed using a 2GB Toshiba SD card purchased from Gamestop. It's a very slow card, and you have to ask the person behind the counter for one, they aren't on the shelves. They're about $3. They're intended for the PSP or Wii/DS according to staff I spoke to.

>III. What happened to Bootmii?
Bootmii required the use of boot2 which is not accessible in vWii. See Step B] I.

What does this mean for you? Essentially, until a Bootmii solution is made, you are installing Homebrew at your own risk with no official means of unbricking it. Of course, if you follow the guide this should be a non-issue.

B] Installing Applications
>I. NAND Dump Without Bootmii
There are alternative methods for dumping the NAND (the primary action of Bootmii, necessary for unbricking vWii should you fail somewhere along the line) which I will not link until an admin/mod confirms with me that they are ok to use and compliant with the ToS (I have a limited understanding of the implications of certain Homebrew applications.)

>II.Homebrew Browser
The latest dl link for Homebrew Browser is located here [wiibrew.org]
It is installed in four easy steps.

1.) Extract the rar file with winrar, 7zip, or any other file manager to your sd card
2.) Create (if not already created) a folder titled apps in the root of your sd card (where boot.elf is located)
3.) Find the folder named Homebrew Browser version (current version) which should have the boot file and .xml and .png inside for Homebrew Browser.
4.) Place this folder in apps, delete the rest as it is not needed (unless you are an advanced user, or wish to read the .txt files.)

When you put the SD card in your Wii, Homebrew Browser should now appear in your Homebrew Channel. Congratulations! You may now install Homebrew apps directly and easily from a trusted repository! PLEASE see step C for very important bug information!!

>III. Importing/Downloading Other Hombrew Applications
Most Homebrew apps should in theory work on the vWii. You can import the applications you have installed on the Wii straight to your WiiU's SD card. If you want to be extremely safe or do not trust yourself to follow these steps correctly, please refrain from importing your apps, and instead redownload them from their source (likely the Homebrew Browser.)

If you would however like to import your applications, copy the root folder of each application you want to import (located in the root of your SD, the first menu you see when plugging your card in to your computer/reader. Same location as boot.elf) and paste it to your WiiU's SD card in the same location.

Next, enter the apps folder on your Wii's SD card and copy the folder for the application there to the apps folder on the WiiU's SD card.

Do not do this for any application that modifies your Wii/vWii in any way. The results are untested (at least by me) and are not confirmed to be safe. Download anything you are unsure of from the source, and always research an application before attempting to put it on the vWii.

C] Supplementary Information
>I.Known Bugs

Update 4.0 forces Homebrew Channel to run in 4:3 (Letterbox, two black bars on screen) every time it is launched.
This is believed to be caused by the vWii reading it as a VC game. <s>This can reportedly be solved by using a custom forwarder for the Homebrew Channel, but is not recommended for it could potentially brick your wii. It is recommended to instead wait for an update to Homebrew, and accept 4:3 for the time being.</s>

Please use the below fix, or wait for the next Homebrew update

Quote
SifJar

Quote
tueidj
Tiny app to disable the letterbox mode: [www.tueidj.net]

Download, extract the zip, inside there is a directory called "aspect_fix"; copy that into the "apps" directory on the root of your SD card, then load up HBC and you'll see the "Aspect Fixer" app. Run it, HBC will reload and the aspect ratio will be fixed (until you next load HBC from the System Menu). That allows you to use any homebrew apps you want in 16:9.

Wiimote becomes unpaired on vWii crashes
If for whatever reason your Homebrew crashes, it is possible that your Wiimote will no longer be synced to your WiiU. This is solved by unplugging the WiiU, rebooting, and resyncing your Wiimote. The WiiU gamepad will not be affected, even if you are viewing the vWii session on the Gamepad.

Homebrew Browser Crashes on Initial Run
On the first run of Homebrew Browser, you will get an error message if you allow the zip file temp full of thumbnails completely download and extract. I have no idea why. This will lock up vWii, and can be solved by deleting the temp folder inside of the ~/apps/homebrew browser/homebrew version#here/temp and reloading Homebrew Browser again from vWii. It will then appear to crash the way it did before, but enter the Homebrew Browser instead. The app thumbnails will now download in the background, and you can view their progress accordingly. The third (and all future times) you run Homebrew Browser, this error will not occur. Alternatively, you can choose to skip this bug causing step by holding B on the first run. It is not known if this solves the issue or only delays it, as I had only one WiiU to test this on.

The WiiU does not boot in to Wii mode when I hold B at startup!
This is not a bug. This is a result of having a password on the default user. Frankly, I wish it would still let you reach the vWii and require a password only when returning to WiiU, but I don't make decisions for Nintendo.

>II.Unresolved Issues
Exiting Homebrew Browser sometimes crashes vWii. Reboot, and possibly pair your wiimote again. This has only happened to me while downloading the thumbnails for apps. See above bug.

>III. It was just released today. I was on the Wii mode earlier today and homebrew was running just fine with widescreen support. I started the channel again after I downloaded the update and the screen has gone back to 4:3 aspect ratio. Before you ask, now I didn't tamper with the ratio settings.

Can anyone else check to see if they have this problem as well? Is there anyway to manually change the aspect ration other than console settings? Thanks for your help.

Transferal of protected save files (2 replies)

Got HBC onto my Wii U the other day, mostly for Gecko OS to enable me to play my U.S games.

Now that's all hunky dory, I was wondering if it's possible for me to get my Smash Bros save file from my Wii, to the Wii Mode. For instance, I CAN back it up on the Wii with Savegame Manager GX, that's fine. But I don't then have an option to import it in Wii mode. I gather it's something to do with IOS' and NAND related things. No doubt my old Wii has a whole bunch of stuff installed that my Wii mode doesn't.

So! Basically, I want to know if there's a way for me to get Savegame Manager or Banana Saves or whatever to enable me to import save files exported from my Wii.

Also, I never found a tool that would just enable me to copy the save file to SD as normal. All these tools seem to export it into a series of files that need to be re-built when imported I suppose. If there is indeed a tool that just removes copy protection, I'd like to know.

Would appreciate any help I can get!

EDIT: No worries, sorted it out myself. Need cIOS 249 or whatever.

YES!............and then it says
This is not the prepared SD card...........
What now!

Now here's the thing.....
I checked my sd card on the pc and it's like this:root\private\wii\app\HCTP\data
and in there to BIN files: content00 and content01...... I guess I still have them?

What I tried next, I still have a folder where I keep these files.

I tried to start the transfer over. Cleared my SD card. preparing, after the preparing, restarting the channel. continue transfer? yes, so, I went to my pc and in the folder was only content00.bin..... no content01.bin. I guess those are the files, it's 63 MB.
So I copied them on my SD card.

Wii U continue transfer............The data of the wii are not on this SD card.

Some people said, having both systems on but that doesn't help....

so, someone at another forum suggested going here.

He talked about FE100-1.2b_fix

but can I solve this?
I really did everything that's said on the wii u!
(and By the way: it copied my files, with me watching it, It were pikmin going to a rocket..... it is still there right?!)

And if it doesn't, would sending everything through cause the system to detect Homebrew Channel and mess something up?
Another question, does the Wii U Transfer Tool move all Wii data to the WiiU or copy it? Like, would the data be on both systems or would it just be moving over?

For this purpose, I have decided to open a "Wii U" Forum, where users can seek help with installing or running applications in Wii Mode on the Wii U.

What NOT to post in this forum:

- Anything that is against the rules such as WADs, ISOs, cIOS, etc.
- Questions regarding native Wii U homebrew, exploits, etc.
- General questions about the Homebrew Channel itself that are unrelated to the Wii U such as, "Why do I only see bubbles in the HBC?" or "X app is not working for me, what do I do?". You can post those in the other Homebrew sections.

HBC install error on Wii U (Wii mode) (12 replies)

Was excited to hear Homebrew Channel can be installed on the Wii U via Wii mode. I am using smash stack and followed all instructions but have not been able to install HBC. The first time I loaded it up and tried to install it failed out and now every time I try again I get this error:

There is no usable or vulnerable IOS installed on this Wii. Please note that we will not use fakesigned IOSes due to security reasons.

It looks like the issue is with IOS58 (see log below). The Wii U is stock with whatever the latest updates are from Nintendo, but otherwise is completely unmodified (no mods or hacks of any kind). I tried the instructions here to try and 'fix' IOS58 but then I get another error:

Quote

sd card detected
opening boot.elf:
boot.elf not found (-1)
usb gecko not found
"no code found to load, hanging.

I guess smash stack only loads .elf files and Dop-Mii is .dol. I tried to use LoadMii to load the Dop-Mii boot.dol but that's not working either.

Any suggestions? Doesn't seem like I can file a bug either as that site looks down.

HackMii installer.log:

Quote

HackMii v1.2 installer starting up
PVR = 00087200
running under IOS 58 rev 0x1920
40 titles are installed
Found IOS 9: revision: 0x50a.
Found IOS 62: revision: 0x191e.
Found IOS 59: revision: 0x1c21.
Found IOS 58: revision: 0x1920.
Found IOS 57: revision: 0x181f.
Found IOS 56: revision: 0x171e.
Found IOS 55: revision: 0x171f.
Found IOS 53: revision: 0x171f.
Found IOS 48: revision: 0x111c.
Found IOS 46: revision: 0xf17.
Found IOS 45: revision: 0xf17.
Found IOS 43: revision: 0xf17.
Found IOS 41: revision: 0xf17.
Found IOS 38: revision: 0x111c.
Found IOS 37: revision: 0x171f.
Found IOS 36: revision: 0xf18.
Found IOS 35: revision: 0xf18.
Found IOS 34: revision: 0xf18.
Found IOS 33: revision: 0xf18.
Found IOS 31: revision: 0xf18.
Found IOS 28: revision: 0x80f.
Found IOS 22: revision: 0x60e.
Found IOS 21: revision: 0x50f.
Found IOS 17: revision: 0x508.
Found IOS 15: revision: 0x508.
Found IOS 14: revision: 0x508.
Found IOS 13: revision: 0x508.
Found IOS 12: revision: 0x30e.
Found IOS 2: revision: 0x201.
Found IOS 80: revision: 0x1c20.
launching IOS 58 for the installer...

IOS launched...

IOS versions: Installer: 58, HBC: 0
starting preparations

device id: NG241107d8
something weird happened (ffffffff)
This IOS can not be trusted (2147483652).
preparations done!

This installer can ?[31;1mNOT?[37;1m continue!

There is no usable or vulnerable IOS installed on this Wii.
Please note that we will not use fakesigned IOSes due to
security reasons.
