Are there any down-sides to having this patch activated?

I applied that patch (using starfall), and I haven't had any issues.

If you ever need to use savemii to install an update from a disc, you will not be able to if you use Starfall or Startpatch for the patch. However, if you use Preloader this will not be an issue.

^^ I've got Bootmii Boot2 so its not really a big deal.
