Redsn0w

I'm going to help my friend jailbreak his iPhone (3G, 3.0), and I'm wondering:
Would redsn0w be the correct application to use?

Yes! I have used it on multiple iPhones. It is by far the easiest jailbreak tool ever made. Plus it is made by the best iPhone hacking team. (Bushing is a part of it)

Do you think you might be able to explain to me how to do it? I'm not sure what sites I can trust that have tutorials/scams.

I'm pretty sure I already know how to do it, but I just want to make sure.

1.start app
2.plug in iPhone then turn it off
3.select your .ispw or firmware file(should be in library/iTunes/device updates) or something like that.
4.select what you want to install. (I suggest Cydia not icy)
5.follow on-screen instructions to enter DFU mode (don't know the exact steps off the top of my head)
6.wait for it to install files
7.let reboot
8.enjoy owned phone

to unlock you must install ultrasn0w from Cydia

Ok, thanks. :)

Sorry for the double post, but what are the chances of "bricking" the iphone through this process?

Next to none- unless you unplug it while jailbreaking (power failure) I have never heard of a bricked iPhone just from jailbreaking. Plus 99% of bricks are fixed by restoring the original iPhone firmware.

Hmm, the IPSW file isn't anywhere on the computer. Is it legal to just download it? I'm guessing it isn't...

Actually, I think it is. However I would look it up first.

Wait. If you updated the phone (didn't come with 3.0) then it has to be on the computer some where. Perhaps a search of ".ispw" will yeild some results?

No, it actually didn't. There's a folder called "iphone update", but there's nothing inside. :/

What I used.

follow the link in the top paragraph to get to the O/S you have and the phone you have (3G vs 3GS)

Very safe... ~0% change of bricking (plus if it does just do a restore)

Yeah, well i decided to update the iphone, and i used blackrain to jailbreak it. It seemed to work fine....

Hmmm.... Odd. I do not think it is illegal to download as it is free... But I would look it up first.

Okey-Dokey, I've got it all figured out! It worked!

Thanks for all your help. :D

No problem. Glad you got it working.

Probably a bit late now, but blackra1n (http://www.blackra1n.com) is a much easier jailbreak. No faffing with IPSWs and stuff. Just dl the program, run it, plug in iPhone and press make it rain. It handles the rest automatically, putting it into recovery mode and everything for you. Then when it reboots, it has a blackra1n app. You just run this and select which installer apps (Cydia, Rock and/or Icy) you want, and press install, and it'll install them for you. You can also apply blacksn0w unlock from the blackra1n app on the iPhone. Then you can uninstall the blackra1n app from the iPhone as it is no longer needed.

EDIT: BTW, I have not done this myself, but I have read about it, and my brother did it succesfully on his iPod Touch 3rd Gen.

Yeah, I already know that. Thats what I ended up using.

Since we couldn't find his IPSW file, I decided, "What the heck, lets just update it and use blackra1n!" Everything worked wonderfully. :)

BlackRain is superior, used it on my 3GS 16GB.

forgive the newb nature of this question, but don't they both do the same thing but just go about doing it differently? i.e. isn't the end result identical? I used redsn0w and had zero problems. Just curious why you say blackrain is superior

edit: never mind, just saw a couple posts up that it does all the work automatically for you... that probably would have saved me a couple steps...

@mdbrim
Blackra1n was helpful for me because you don't need the IPSW file. When using redsn0w, you have to have the IPSW file.

And the process was really quick, but I don't know if that is any different from redsn0w.
