...I don't think so. And yeah, this is completely offtopic...So mod, move or delete.

Pre-slim models are able to run Linux in all its splendor. You just don't get hardware accelerated graphics.

Original PS3's with PS2 compatibility can load PS2 homebrew through Swap Magic discs. They can also run YaBasic programs if you have a PS2 demo disk with YaBasic on it, but they're pretty limited I think.
Any Phat PS3 can install Linux.
ANY PS3 can run BD-R Java homebrew (think thats what its called) through Blu-Ray discs (but they cost quite a bit afaik).

marcan, myself, and a few others had an extremely interesting discussion about this on #wiidev yesterday. Rather then tell you about it, take a peek at the log (irrelevant n00b teasing removed):

[20:02] _schism_> ouch. buy a new one and send the old one to marcan so he can make new brew............
[20:02] <@marcan> someone send me a PS3 instead
[20:02] <@marcan> c1 shoved his PS3 under my face at 26c3 and invited me to poke it in rather unorthodox ways
[20:02] <@marcan> even got me interested now
[20:04] Storlek> oh hey, c3 -- how was that?
[20:05] Storlek> any presentations worth a look?
[20:05] <@marcan> it was fun
01[20:10] Anyways, marcan, please tell us the highlights of 26c3
[20:10] <@marcan> femtocells are awesome
[20:11] <@marcan> I dunno, what are the hilights?
[20:11] <@marcan> we go there to hack on stuff
[20:11] <@marcan> obviously there's the gsm talk that made the headlines and such
[20:11] <@marcan> then there are other talks worth looking at
[20:12] Storlek> oh, did the ps3 guys manage to break the hypervisor?
01[20:12] Arikado> Any good ones of them publicly available already?
[20:12] <@marcan> "the ps3 guys"?
[20:12] I totally don't follow that scene at all
[20:12] <@marcan> I'm not aware of any promising ps3 group :P
01[20:12] Arikado> Thats because there is no scene
[20:12] <@marcan> anyway, tmbinc, c1, and I got together and looked at two or three plans of attack
[20:12] Storlek> Oh, well maybe that's why I don't know about it!
[20:12] <@marcan> if anyone bothers to ship me a free ps3 I might care
[20:12] <@marcan> if no one does then I might still care, or not, depends
[20:12] <@marcan> :P
[20:12] <@marcan> I never planned on touching the ps3 but it was too tempting
[20:13] Storlek> if I know you'll be able to crack it open I'd send you one
[20:13] <@marcan> "here, have at it, you can even rip chunks of metal off"
[20:13] <@marcan> we pwned that thing hard (and it still works!)
[20:13] Storlek> well, I mean "crack it open" nonliterally
01[20:13] Arikado> I cant believe you can't run linux on the slims
01[20:13] Arikado> Thats just crying for hackers
[20:13] Storlek> haha
[20:13] Storlek> yea
[20:13] <@marcan> what I mean is that hacking devices is a lot easier when you're not afraid of cosmetic issues and aren't scared of breaking it somewhat
[20:14] Storlek> I never really gave a crap at all about the ps3 until I learned that
[20:14] Storlek> because it was just like, "oh I guess it'd be fun but I already have a computer"
[20:14] Storlek> and now it's more of, what, they told me I can't do something!
01[20:15] Arikado> Right, I still want to buy a second wii to just break it messing around with the hardware
[20:15] <@marcan> buy a ps3 instead, then you can actually do new stuff
[20:15] Storlek> marcan, I never cared about appearance, my last laptop was held together partly by duct tape and it had a small block of wood propping the screen up
[20:15] <@marcan> the wii is thoroughly pwned already
01[20:15] Arikado> Good point
[20:15] Storlek> but that didn't make programming easier for me :(
[20:15] <@marcan> Storlek: I'm just not too fond of possibly breaking my relatively expensive <1 year old PS3
01[20:15] Arikado> Does the ps3 actually output on a non-hdtv though?
[20:15] Storlek> why wouldn't it; and why would you care?
[20:15] <@marcan> I guess that might chance if I get myself a decent job and just get some money to spare, heh
[20:16] <@marcan> Arikado: yes
[20:16] <@marcan> in fact it comes only with composite cables :P
[20:16] <@marcan> you need to provide an HDMI cable yourself
[20:16] Storlek> it's the 21st century, man!
[20:16] Storlek> everyone uses hd now... .. . except nintendo
01[20:16] Arikado> Heh, then it looks like it's time for me to get one
[20:16] <@marcan> wii2!
01[20:16] Even easier to hack then Wii1!
[20:17] <@marcan> oh wait, the Wii can already output HDTV, it also has a GPGPU and 54MB of EDRAM RLY ITS TRUE (/tapionvslink>
[20:17] Storlek> marcan: Looking forward to that one thoroughly. If nothing else it'd be interesting to see if they decided to keep the broken-crap IOS or break backward compatibility
[20:17] <@marcan> I never get tired of that guy, he's just so hilarious
[20:17] <@marcan> Storlek: broken crap IOS, guaranteed :P
[20:17] Storlek> well, then it's already broken and our work here is done
[20:17] <@marcan> from what I've looked it sounds like the PS3 isn't that secure
[20:17] Storlek> if they broke compat, then did they learn or do they still fail.
[20:18] <@marcan> sounds like it's less secure than the 360, it's just that it's also somewhat mysterious
[20:18] <@marcan> but it looks like there ought to be one or two workable attacks
[20:18] Storlek> PS3 didn't need to be secure, because no one would bother hacking it
01[20:18] Arikado> So the PS3 just lacks decent hackers then
[20:18] <@marcan> something like that
[20:18] it was too expensive for the omgwarez idiots, and allready accessible enough for the programmer sorts
[20:18] <@marcan> anyway, someone get me a ps3 so I can try some RAM injection stuff :P
[20:18] <@marcan> I hear it's not encrypted, that should lead to "easy" pwnage
[20:18] <@marcan> (take easy with a grain of salt)
[20:19] Storlek> marcan, can you do paypal
01[20:19] Arikado> Is there actually names for the attacks you had in mind?
[20:19] DesktopMa> could still be signed :P
[20:19] <@marcan> ... I wasn't actually serious :P
01[20:19] Shhh, don't tell Storlek that :p
[20:19] Storlek> lol
[20:19] Storlek> and the ps3 is still $600 right?
[20:19] <@marcan> nah
[20:19] <@marcan> $300 I think?
[20:20] <@marcan> whoosh
[20:20] <@marcan> I'm tired
[20:21] Storlek> although I *have* been known to randomly paypal money and/or send packages containing random stuff to people
[20:21] <@marcan> bushing does that
[20:21] T00LM4N> btw quick thank you to anyone who had anything to do with anything for hacking the wii. PROPS! lol damn i used a lot of "any"
[20:21] <@marcan> still makes me feel bad

So there isn't homebrew for PS3?
Re: help quickly!!!
January 03, 2010 03:47PM
There is no "XMB homebrew" for PS3 yet.
Non-slim PS3s can run Linux with some restrictions.
All PS3s can run Blu-ray Java applications.

So yes or no, depending on what you mean. In the purest sense of the word, yes, there is a way to execute some code that Sony did not approve. You cannot use all of the PS3 hardware yet, however.

everlife199, I have to ask: What kind of an urgent situation did you get yourself into involving PS3 homebrew that prompted you to write "help quickly!!!" ?
Re: help quickly!!!

uh I don't know I guess I just needed an answer quickly.
Re: help quickly!!!

Read your own topic or I'll close it. This is the third time you've asked this and you've gotten more then enough answers.

You're wrong, you can, but you need a flash card to do it.

you need a flash cart which with the latest bootloaders are illegal.

Oh, i didn't know you could with the DSi. My bad.
Re: help quickly!!!
January 04, 2010 10:49PM
The latest DSi firmware update didn't kill all flashcarts?
Re: help quickly!!!
January 04, 2010 11:08PM
1.4 did indeed kill all flashcarts, but there are (illegal) workarounds in the form of updated bootloaders which contain copyrighted Ninty code to allow them to boot on 1.4, making it think they are official games.

If you mean 1.5, that was a fake which was reported on several sites before it was realised.

Yeah, I was talking about the 1.4 one. Thanks for the interesting information :)
