Is this legal?

If I own an original copy of a Wii game, is it legal for me to make a backup copy of it and use that so that if the backup gets broken, I can just make another copy from the original? If it is legal, can I just run the game from a certain homebrew application, or do I need to get a modchip?

It should be legal, as long as you do it yourself and do not circumvent any copy protection
Of course you have to keep the original!

I am curious. How can you create a backup on your own?
