Has the wii speaker been reverse engineered?
It would be pretty cool if you could play music (albeit low quality music) through it.

It's a generic speaker that you find in other portable electronics, like the DS.

Doesn't it allow input sound though?

I guess it is a myth.
When details about the chips in the Wiimote came up, many speculated it might be possible, because the speaker chip might be able to work in both ways.
(That was in first year of the Wii, so I don't know anything that came up in between)

Oh, I thought he was talking about Wii Speak actually <_<

But, daniel_c_w, I've heard that myth as well. I can't vouch for its validity though as I don't have a proper understanding of the chips.

Dito. But I guess that the people who started this myth undertsnad even less :D

I'd be actually happy, if I am wrong, though.

Well, I opened up a Wiimote once (made a mess of it, I'm afraid) and the speaker looked like just a normal speaker, I don't think there was any input sound on it at all.

Anyway, has anyone managed to send sound clips through it?

Any normal speaker might work as microphone.
(you can try to use a simple headphone in a microphone port)

I guess, that even if the chip used to generate the sounds can work both ways, that the Wiimote firmware can't transfer it anyway.

I'll try to solder it to a microphone I have laying around and see what happens.
