I hope this doesn't be too much offtopic for here (feel free to delete it, mods!), but I just have to ask:

What do you think about it, folks? (Personally, I kinda of didn't like it at all)

Thank God Chicago was eliminated first.

I'm an American and I feel that the Olympics do not belong in the hometown of the man destroying America. It would be another HUGE waste of money we dont have.

Why not? I'd feel the same toward any city in support of our socialist president.

Franklin D Roosevelt was president for 4 terms (or was it 3) and he was socialist, shows how you yanks are so hypocritical

also, most american presidents were actually socialist but never used it run government, if america stayed hyper-capitalist they would be overtaken by china in no time

You Obama haters make me laugh. You would rather see America get screwed just to blame it on Obama or prevent him from claiming some success. I am a conservative but even I realize that the trouble we are in now is mainly caused by the previous administration and Im willing to give the guy a little slack to dig us out of this mess.

You're conservative and you're okay with the failed economic stimulus plan, the failed governement bailouts, and the proposed government control of the health care industry? For goodness sake, the man's spent more money in one year then every president in the last 10 years and now he wants government intervention (control, really) of a private industry. But you're fine with that! And you call yourself conservative...

How did the bailouts fail? Are GM and Chrysler still with us? Yes, they are.

Why shouldn't the insurance industry be controlled?

Oh, don't worry. Our current debt is less than the GDP, still. We aren't in any hole that we can't get out of.

The first bailout failed. That's why there was a second one. No debate on that. Yes, the second one "worked" as in it did what it was supposed to.

However, I don't agree with the bailouts at all.

If a business fails, it's the fault of the business. The government does nothing but collect tax revenue via businesses. The government has no right to give a business money to prevent it's fall. 1)It's not fair to every other business 2)It's a waste of money we don't have 3)It goes against the original values of America

If the bailouts hadn't passed, there was talk of a merger and other resolutions between failing auto companies. When businesses fail, industry's don't. New, stronger, businesses will take the place of the fallen ones since there is an economic opportunity to grasp by filling the void left by no longer existing companies. Thus, the economy takes care of itself.

Also, on a side note, Ford refused the government handouts and is still alive and well today.

I'm not going to rewrite my above spiel on why the government has no place in private business. Instead, let me leave you with this question: What will happen to the existing private health care companies? Does the government have a right to shut them down so it can monopolize an industry for money? The answer should be obvious...

Also, on a side note, Obama's health care plan significantly limits the health benefits which can be received under his proposed government company. In other words; We will be getting less health care for the same (or probably higher) price.

I disagree The olympics bring money to the city/state

2002 Utah winter Olympics
Official state estimate of economic impact: $4.8 billion in sales, 35,000 job years of employment, $1.5 billion in earnings for Utah workers.

1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics
As has been widely reported, the direct, tangible economic impact of the Olympics on Georgia is between $3.5 billion and $5 billion, with the Atlanta region receiving the vast majority of that sum. Olympics-related short term job creation has been estimated at 80 000 jobs, with State tax revenues from this economic juggernaut pegged at $176 million.

Other Olympics have mostly ended in profit for the Hosting city
Olympic Games Profits Since 1984

1984: Los Angeles Olympic Games made profits of US $250 million.

1988: Seoul Olympic Games made profits of US $300 million, a record high for a government-run Olympiad.

1992: Barcelona Olympic Games made profits of US $5 million.

1996: Atlanta Olympic Games made profits of US $10 million.

2000: Sydney Olympic Games Organizing Committee generated an income of US $1.756 billion.

2004: Athens Olympic Games ended in a loss.

So I don't see how this is waste of money.

According to wolframalpha.com spending has steadly increased with each year for at least the last 10 years. Not a giant spike in the last year as you suggest.

Please stop spreading FUD about the President of the United States of America.

Loss of money

IIRC, the 2008 Olympics in China also ended in a loss for China.

Also, you're overlooking that a lot of money goes into the Olympics long before it (hopefully) comes back. At this point in time, we don't have that money.

In fact, we don't have any money - hence, we're in debt. The national deficit right now is $11,934,872,041,446.84 ( [www.brillig.com] ) ALMOST 12 TRILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT!!!

If we look at the slope on a chart, no. If we look at the actual numbers, yes. .5 trillion dollars increase is quite a lot. It is the largest "spike" increase, uhm, ever. Take a look for yourself: [en.wikipedia.org]

Stop twisting numbers and making them not look as bad as they really are. We need to cut down on spending, not keep going up.
