The bailout was a one time thing that pretty much kept things from getting worse, so the budget and the deficit will fall.
Think about it: what if GM had gone Chapter 7? What would happen to the 252,000 employees they had at the time, not to mention the dealer network? We're probably talking over 300,000 jobs lost if GM had failed.

I disagree. I believe more money would've been saved by sending out unemployment checks then by bailing out failing companies. And as I said before, talks of company's merging were taking place which leads me to speculate that the number of people out of work with nowhere to turn would've been much lower had (and they probably would've) such plans gone through. And again, Ford did just fine without the money.

There shouldn't have been "one time". There should have been never. The government has no right to interfere in the economy in such an impactful manner. When it does, it violates our democratic principles with socialistic ones. If I wanted to live in a socialist society, I'd go live in Russia.

I support the health care plan. The GM bailout I am kind of iffy about, and always have been. The financial bailout was needed. Let's leave it at that.

It's obvious I'm not going to be able to convince you otherwise :-P And there's certainly no reason why you shouldn't want to see if something new works out (health care). Only time will tell what would've been best.

Yes, let's drop it here.

You're conservative and you're okay with the failed economic stimulus plan, the failed governement bailouts, and the proposed government control of the health care industry? For goodness sake, the man's spent more money in one year then every president in the last 10 years and now he wants government intervention (control, really) of a private industry. But you're fine with that! And you call yourself conservative...

Dude it has been 9 months and this country was put in the crapper by the Republicans. Dont think that since I am blaming the republicans I am a Dem. Republicans have not held true to conservative ideals since the Regan administration. They are responsible for over 80% of the national debt and most of their spending has outpaced the GDP. Yet most republicans only complain when a Democrat spends money. That is why I became a Libertarian (the real conservative party). But this all started long before Obama took office. A lot of it was caused by fuzzy math from the Bush administration. They ran two wars that were not included in the balance sheets. When Obama took office, he made them part of the budget, so yes the cost is going to go up but it is also more responsible spending, the bill have to get paid eventually so they had better be in the budget.

Regarding the stimulus, last I checked the unemployment rate has not only slowed but unemployment is dropping. Something needed to be done like it or not, and if there was no stimulus a lot of businesses would have gone under. That would have cost the government a lot more than it spent on the stimulus (lost tax revenue, welfair, etc.)

Lastly, regarding healthcare, right now health care is run by the insurance companies who are pretty much fixing the price of coverage. People who cant afford it are picked up by the government which you and I pay for. A government healthcare program if done like the plans in virtually every other civilized country will lower the cost of coverage because the insurance companies will not have so much control. That either equates to more take home pay or more money for shareholders, either way that also equates to more tax revenue for the government to pay for the plan.

Finally, being conservative is not just about complaining when people spend money, its looking into what they are spending the money on and trying to figure out if it is a wise investment or not. Bush screwed this country for 8 years, I am willing to withhold judgment for a few years to see if this guy can turn things around. If not, I will vote for another guy. But come on, to be happy that the US didn't get the olympics just because you dont like Obama, that is just sad. You have got some really twisted priorities if you put politics above your country.

Agreed - I'm also libertarian. However, it was more then possible for Obama to make spending go down FYI. I was hoping his decisions would play out well, but obviously they haven't.

I would bet otherwise actually - that the stimulus costed more. Irregardless, the economy is still in the drain and still dropping further. And unemployment is fluctuating - jumping up and down and back and forth; It's still arguably lot better then it's been before though.

You do realize that Obama's proposed healthcare plan will bring you and I less and harder to recieve health benefits for the same or even higher of a price? If the government offers a poor man's health care program (which again, sucks compared to the private ones) I doubt that the private companies will even flinch at the government getting customers they were never going to get.

You misunderstand me a little. Overall, the idea of the Olympics in America is appealing. But Obama took his wife and effing Oprah down to try and "bully" the Olympic committee into choosing Chicago. Appropriately, Chicago was knocked first. For that, I am happy. Honestly though, as I said before, it's really not an appropriate time to have the Olympics in America now anyway with our inane national deficit.
