Some rules don't make sense.

Here it says not only to not mention "backup loaders", but also not to even mention "softmods". But wait, aren't ALL homebrew applications (what this site is about) based on softmods? I mean to run a homebrew app (such as a mp3 music player) you need the Homebrew Channel. But doesn't the HBC count as a softmod? This doesn't make any sense.

You're right, the HBC falls under the literal definition of "softmod" (software modification), but generally the term "softmod" implies using software to bypass system checks (AKA run copied games). That's because a mod chip is generally called a "hardmod". Does that make sense?
"Softmod" in the context that we use it means to install anything that allows running copied Wii/GC games.

Honestly, it's really just there to deter people from posting whom consider "softmods" or "softmodding" to be a term which encapsulates the exploitation of a Wii vulnerability through ultimately enabling piracy. If you're intelligent enough to understand the use of the term literally, then you're probably not going to use it in favor of a more specific vocabulary anyways.
