How do I run GC and Wii backups? (+ other newb ?'s)

A few days ago me and my friends decided to homebrew my wii, which we got very little use out of. Using bannerbomb v2 (Wii was on 4.2u) we got the HBC and from there played pokemon blue on the VBAGx emulator for 7 hours straight. After, I saw on wiibrew.org that you could update to 4.3, so I did. I recently found out that I could now play GC backups and Wii backups but I don't know how to. All of the tutorials I see online don't apply to 4.3.

I think there is also a problem with my DVD playability because I have put DVDs in and started playing them from the MPlayer CE and it just says mounting but nothing happens. I tried to install DVDx but it says some stub error installing it but then I found that the new Hackmii installer replaced DVDx? Would I need to be able to play DVDs to do the backups?

P.S. I believe that I installed originally using hackmii 0.7 but then updated the HBC using 0.8 in an attempt to fix DVD problem but nothing happened.
