Quick question about video settings in emulators

Specifically the GX emulators, since they seem to have the most.

What are the "proper" settings to get it as close as possible to an original console? I know that the default settings on VBA GX cut off the top and bottom of the screen, so I've set that to scale down to 95% in both directions, but what about FCE and snes9x? Does the 100% setting just take into account overscan? I notice that scaling it down does reveal more of the screen, but there's often noise around the edges. Or, should I enable some of the cropping settings? Thanks.

Oh, one other thing. Does VBA GX automatically account for widescreen settings? FCEU GX and snes9x GX both have "16:9 correction" settings, but VBA GX does not. Would "maintain aspect ratio" keep the screen the proper ratio in both 16:9 and 4:3?
