What updates come with SW: Force Unleashed II (2)?
October 29, 2010 02:33PM
I recently got the new game Star Wars: Force Unleashed II (2). Just so everyone knows, it is original and retail.

When I insert the disc, it shows "Wii System Update". So far there is no documentation that I can find to tell exactly what it is updating. I have a newer Wii with v4.3 system menu. It will not let me play the game without updating, but I don't want to lose Homebrew.

Is there any way to determine what updates are included?
If not, does anyone know what is included or where such information could be found?

Thanks.

There was a small shop channel update after the 4.3 update. It's probably just that - harmless IOS and channel updates. If it was even a small threat to homebrew, it would be all over WiiBrew by now ;-)

Thanks for replying. Hopefully that is the case. When I'm ready I guess I'll take the leap (after I back some things up).

I just found it odd that it does not let you play until you update, and will not let you cancel or opt out of the update (You have to do a hard reset to back out), which is what freaked me out a bit.

Once I work up the nerve, I'll try it and report back.

Thanks again.

I don't remember if it still works but you could try WUFE [Wii Update File Extractor] to see all the files in the update

Here is a followup. I used WUFE (thanks bg...) to pull the updates. And well... this thing is a full system update, at least the way I can think to interpret the results. I want to invite anyone with experienced eyes to give this a look and let me know what you think. Needless to say, at this point I do not feel like "remodding" and I found a work around to play without update (Please do not ask, rules will not permit discussion and I wish to abide, although you can probably figure out). I'll see if I can play around with the versions and see what is triggering the update when the disc is loaded. I assume it is a "if 'current version '< 'update version' then system update"-type of routine. Also, just for reference, since it behaves the same way, I am going to pull and list the updates included with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

These are the updates included on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II or 2.

On my system, all the versions are higher except for some removed stubs, which I am assuming is the trigger.

I haven't gotten the Super Mario Galaxy 2 update list ready yet. I wanted to get the posted. Thanks.

Followup:

I went ahead and ran the system update, which included the "disclaimer of doom" which can only be declined by holding the power button for 4 seconds.

I ran the update which went much too quickly to be doing any real patching. From what I can tell it simply goes and stubs off the usual stuff. It seems to leave 36 and 202 alone, thus Homebrew is still there when it is all over. At that point the game is playable by conventional means.

When I went back in with Dop-Mii (WiiBrew Edition) and cleared the stubs, sure enough, after restarting the Wii and inserting the game, instead of the game, I got "System Update..."

It looks like the anticipated demand for this title made it ripe for use as a vehicle for stubbing. We'll see in the near future if I reap any further consequences.

For the average user I guess this won't be a problem. For myself (a tinkerer, tester, dabbling in development) and others, it may be a hassle. I understand why there seems to be the need to stub out the system. However, I think there are legitimate uses for customizations, even though the same customizations can be used for piracy.

Hope this is helpful.

For future reference, you can play games and skip their updates by loading them with Gecko OS. (I assume you used some loader to bypass the update and those are all derived from Gecko OS.)

I guess I can mention this since it is on the wiki... StartPatch, easy and works well in this specific case with out excess configuration or otherwise (vs. PreLoader and some others). I hope this thread will be helpful to others interested.
Thanks again to bg.

If You have softmodded Wii I believe You can do some Block-Update, I think Priiloader has it

EDIT #1
The trick is that most (if not all) games just says they "must" have updated Wii OS but to tell You the truth the so-called NSMB can still be played on 4.0 or maybe lower without a hunch (it has 4.2 update on disc I think) same goes for other games, no single game found that I couldn't run on 4.0 because of some updates (yet :P)

You can also run a game in gecko os to skip a update needed for the game, at one time it would also load what was needed from the update for that game to work.
