Is there a way to eliminate the sd card and just do everything off of a usb hdd? That way I can just run the apps and everything else off of one drive.

The HBC as well as a number of apps can load from a HDD, as long as its formatted as FAT32. Not all apps will work this way though so for some there is no way to eliminate the SD card.
