Loading Games on modded Wii

Hi, I am old geezer moderately computerate literarate. Bought my 5 y/o son an already modded Wii with a WRSB external HD. Came with 5 original game discs also already loaded on HD. Lots of HD space left. Bought SpongeBob Creature from the Krusty Krab game but only one game on the disc will play. So I tried loading it on the external HD. It loaded and I can see it minus the cover art. But it still only plays one game out of many (same SB racing game). So I rented another copy from Gamefly, to see if I had a defective game. If I play it in the Wii, from the game disc, it will still only play one game. When I click on any other selection, it says game files not loaded. It's as if the Wii can only read a small portion of either the game disc or the loaded copy. Does a modded Wii treat a game disc differently? Why would it load part of the disc and not the entire game?
PS: I am not sure if this is considered "backups" and I will get banned.
