on August 28 wii has shut down the friend messaging feature. is there any way to circumvent this with homebrew?

Nope. Someone would have to mimic Nintendo's Connect24 server and then patch the System Menu to use their custom server for it to work, and I doubt there are enough homebrewers who even care enough for it to be worth all that effort. (And cost; servers aren't free to run)
