Softmodded Wii, need help updating store

I softmodded this Wii a long time ago, then gave it away since I barely used it. Now, after barely using it themselves, they want to start using it for netflix, problem is they can't get through to the store. Tried an official update, they don't use homebrew anyway so if it wipes it all no big deal, offical updates won't go through (seems to be blocked by the softmod).

Since I remember almost nothing about the softmod, how can I update this?

Were you able to update? I haven't been able to access the store since modding, and I'm not sure whether to click "update" as prompted when I insert my Angry Birds Star Wars disc. I'm running 4.3, so I'm not sure what Nintendo needs to update.
