Bootmii boot failure

Bootmii boot failure
May 23, 2009 11:21PM
I have installed Bootmii beta 1 on my early vintage NTSC 3.3u Wii with a wiikey. Now that it is installed, the system hangs on boot if my SD card is installed.

The installer allowed me to install bootmii (boot2), homebrew channel, and dvdx. I did so for all 3 (already had an older version of hbc).

The installer indicated it is using ios installers 36, channels 55. I have my system connected via component video, and am using a transcend 4GB SD card (it is NOT an SDHC).

The system will boot to the system menu if the SD card is not installed. If the 4GB card is installed, the system hangs for an indefinite time (5 minutes is the longest I've waited). I speculated that it may not work well with the large SD card (32k clusters, FAT32) may not be appreciated by bootmii.

I reinstalled, with an AData 2GB card. After this installed, the system would boot up and show the BootMi menu a couple times before launching the system menu, but it boots intermittently - sometimes it starts up, sometimes it hangs. It seems like if I install bootmii on the 2GB card, it'll work until I try booting with the 4GB card, then it will no longer function (2GB card hangs) until I reinstall boot2. This may be coincidental, I have not done it enough times to be sure. I copied the bootmi dir from the working 2GB install to the 4GB card but it doesn't make it work.

I have also tried installing bootmii as an IOS, which appears to work.

I do get the cd slot flicker if no SD card is installed.

Other possible pertinent details:

- System is 3.3u
- System is NTSC
- System uses component video
- Edited Out
- Behaviour is experienced with and without USB drive attached
- SD cards are Transcend 133x Secure Digital Card 4GB, AData Turbo SD 150x 2GB
- I use a lot of homebrew on the 4GB card, emulators, homebrew browser, and various tools and games downloaded from it. It is about 90% full.

Its a real drag not being able to boot with the 4GB card, it would be nice to figure out a fix or remove the boot2 bootmii.

This can be filed under SD card incompatibility. The fact that 4GB non-SDHC cards don't work is a known issue -- they're kinda weird -- but a lower priority than fixing SDHC cards.

Your other issues are unrelated.

Thanks for the info. I will wait for a future beta which will let me uninstall, and do some experimentation with smaller SD cards.
