I think XMBC server would make for a great homebrew app and would probally come to replace mplayer another suggestion might be a vsphere app for esx/esxi while it can sonnect to preloaded oses on a esx/esxi server if a vnc plugin is installed a app for powering on/off vm's would be nice and maybe some additional features.
