What is IOS16?

What is IOS16?

The Hackmii posts about the Argon channel mention it using IOS16 to get around some security measure. Just curious, what is IOS16? Does it bypass some security or have some exploit the others don't?

Well, it contains the fakesign bug, just like all other IOSs at the time of it's release.
However, it was _only_ on the Gayfish Disc (a.k.a. the Pinkfish Disc) and is not on the Nintendo Update Servers.
So, the 3.3 round 2, and 3.4 updates did _not_ disable this.

So pirates have used a pirated version of IOS16 to re-enable fakesigning, so they can install cIOS, then repatch in the bug into all their IOSs.

Hope that helps.

yeah, since IOS16 is officially by nintendo and not on any wiis, pirates can install it onto any wii and use it to install fakesigned stuff.

To expand on Squidman's definition of the "Pink Fish disc," you can find info here: [wiibrew.org]

This disc is the only piece of software known to use IOS16. Since IOS16 is not distributed with games or via Nintendo's Update servers, they didn't update IOS16 when they released the batch-update of all IOSes to fix the signing bug. This means that if you can get your hands on that disc (or just IOS16) you can install it under signing-bug fixed IOS (since it is officially signed), and since it does not have the signing bug fixed on it, you can start using it to install fakesigned content.

Of course, there's not really a legal way to get your hands on this disc without working for Nintendo. (And I'm not sure they'd consider "accidentally shipping it out" a legal ownership)

so that is why using IOS16 is shaddy... it isn't available from Nintendo's servers... gotcha...

that also explains why downgrading a fresh 3.4 is also illegal, it uses that IOS.....

I'm curious about why exactly the Pinkfish Disc uses this IOS. I know why pirates use it, but why Nintendo use it?

No clue. There were only a few bytes different between it and IOS15, IIRC.

I meant it installs it, not uses it. :\
EDIT: I'm doing research on Wiibrew to see what uses it.

What exactly are you trying to figure out? According to [wiibrew.org], several games come with IOS15.

the pirate cIOS is 249, but 16 is a Nintendo IOS that has not been updated to block fake-signing (because it was only found on an official Nintendo repair disc [AKA pinkfish or gayfish disc]). Apparently, one of these discs was left in a Wii and that's how IOS16 was leaked. Having IOS16 allows pirates to use fake-signed content on pretty much any Wii (because none of them should have IOS16 already)
