Yes you can use a USB hard drive, but a lot of users are reporting that usb devices are being randomly disconnected.
In regards to armboot.bin if you have the latest version of bootmii installed you don't need to replace it.
And yes launching the ELF through Ceiling Cat's SD program loader works fine you don't need to replace bootmii.
