Is the wii simply not powerfull enough to play dvd's (.vob's) from a SMB share?
I am using the 100mbit LAN adapter for loading the media, but it just can't play the .vob's fluently. (host is gigabit)
Tried mplayer ce 0.5 and geexbox, but both no good...

Is it the CPU/GPU which are underpowered for this application?
divx/xvid play excellent

The Wii shouldn't be underpowered for that kind of task

I never tried it, but if an 600 mhz PC can do it, the Wii should be able to do it as well.

Is the vob unencrypted?

The answer is: SPEED, OHHHHH

=P, now seriously, Wii WiFi sux at transfer speed. And the USB ports sux as well. Your LAN speed is capped to 10Mb/s, due to the lan adapter + IOS limitations.

Well I have the USB 2.0 cIOS installed.

And the usb LAN adapter is based on the Asix AX88772 chip which is:

ASIX AX88772 USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter

(see [www.asix.com.tw] )

So the speed should be good?

edit:
And when I plug the LAN adapter in my PC, it detects it as usb 2.0 device. And when I install driver it's connection is 100mbit?
So the LAN adapter+USB2 cIOS should provide enough speed?

edit2:
If there are IOS limititations for the 10mbit link speed could those be modded/removed??
