How to upgrade standard wii channels?

How can you update the standard wii channels, like the shop, news, weather, and the other channels so that you can use them without doing an entire system update and affecting the homebrew on the wii. I'm sure there has to be a way becuase i know i had it figured out once, but i waited too long do anything and forgot the names of the programs and now i cant find them anywhere.
