Bricked Wii Still under 1 year warranty
October 01, 2010 07:46PM
I got this Wii from someone yesterday who says they hacked it and it quit working because now all it does when he powers it on is stays on a black screen. He claimed that he had installed BootMii into boot2, after looking at the installer.log on the sd card I see that is not the case. I am including the contents of the installer.log file if anyone cares to read it and tell me what they think may have happened. I did verify with Nintendo support that this console is still under the 1 year Warranty. I am sorry but I do not have any other background information about this Wii.

I personally took apart an official gamecube controller and plugged it into port 4 and tried the "savemiifri" trick I heard about, after multiple tries, no such luck. I tried getting into Priiloader in case he had installed it, no such luck. I press the power button and the Wii just stays on a blank screen, I honestly did not check to see if I was getting sound, but I don't think that is very relevant at this point. I can insert a disc and eject it with no problems.

My question is this, based off of what you see in this installer.log file and also based upon the fact that I do not believe Priiloader to be installed on this machine, and finally considering this machine is still within factory warranty, is there any chance that if I send it in to Nintendo for repair that they will be able to detect that an attempt at hacking was made and therefore refuse to replace the console, or is there a chance that the brick may be so severe that they will not be able to access the system infrastructure and will either repair the console or send a new one?

I didn't spend any money on this console, so at the worst case scenario I have sacrificed some time and have entertained a small bit of false hope.

I would appreciate anyone's personal experience or opinions in this matter.

Thanks!

it isn't under warranty anymore!!! sorry... little brick humor...

they will most likely be able to tell... but like you said, you didn't pay anything for it so you've got nothing to lose.

Not sure of anything else you'll be able to do...
Re: Bricked Wii Still under 1 year warranty

Well if it's some sort of low level brick then they wouldn't be able to tell. I'd suggest sending it it telling them it bricked (depending on how old it is) while installing a System Update.
Not sure if that would work though if the Wii is too new it would already have the 4.2 update.
From the installer log I can see that it was on 4.2 but maybe it was originally 4.1 or less?

Well the guy told me he had got Christmas 2009, so I'm not sure what System Menu it would have come with, the serial number started with LU3976 if that means anything. But also I had looked at SaveMii troubleshooting with the diagrams shown it does sound like this is a low level brick so maybe they will just replace it, you never know. I don't want to entertain too much false hope on this though, but I did read another thread just a bit ago from these forums and that guy had the full brick, black screen when he powered on and he was able to get Nintendo to send him another one. Time for me to be patient.

Also, speculation is fun.

mdbrim, since I am not the cause of this brick, your humor is appreciated :). I will send it into Nintendo on Monday and just see what happens.

Yeah it it really was for Christmas 2009 then it is very likely it came with 4.1U. Tell Nintendo it bricked while installing the update and they will replace it. I highly doubt they'll find traces aof homebrew because the Wii doesn't load anything.

Yeah it it really was for Christmas 2009 then it is very likely it came with 4.1U. Tell Nintendo it bricked while installing the update and they will replace it. I highly doubt they'll find traces aof homebrew because the Wii doesn't load anything.

Well that's what I'm hoping will happen, when I had called Nintendo earlier this morning to verify this Wii was still under warranty, the rep asked what was wrong with the Wii and I just told her that the Wii was working one day and the next day I turned it on to a black screen. I mean she went ahead and set up a repair ticket with a prepaid shipping label for me, I just haven't sent it out yet. I started wondering if I should just try to put it on ebay or craigslist for parts, but I really think I am just going to go ahead and send it out to Nintendo on Monday morning and hopefully by the time I'm back from vacation I will have a replacement Wii waiting for me.

Anyways, I will keep everyone informed as to the progress of this issue.

UPDATE - In case anyone is interested, I just received an email from Nintendo this morning stating that they did receive my console for repair. I will keep everyone posted as to the status as I receive updates.

WOOT! FINAL UPDATE - Nintendo replaced the motherboard (I believe that is what the rep said) and they have already shipped it back out to me, no cost and now with a new 1 year warranty. Anyone looking to buy a Wii?
