I have a wii from about 2006-2007 running menu 4.0u. I read a guide about changing the iso to I0S36 (v3351) w/FakeSign, and I wanted to know if it's wise to do so. I might use dop mii or cios, and tell me which is better.

First of all, there's a difference between "ISO" and "IOS".
Second, if you only want to add the trucha bug, then DOP-Mii should do the trick

Sorry I'm new to this stuff im used to doing stuff like jailbreaking ipods and such. I just wanted to know because I wanted to do backups, but this fourm will not allow talking about it. Can I pm you guide I'm gonna use and you tell me if it's safe?

Most of the guides out there are not very good and you must be careful with what you install on you're Wii. You should first understand exactly what you're going to do before you do it.

First, backup my nand. I will not do anything without backing it up first.

Yeah that would be good. Once you have BootMii as boot2, you should be able to recover from most bricks that can occur from dangerous software/user error.

And also should I update to 4.2u before installing anything or just aviod updates all together?

You can update, if you'd like; It really doesn't matter. Just be sure that you use the latest Homebrew Channel.
