Is it safe? (to update you wii through games)

Is there any sort of list of recent games that are "safe to update"?
I want to by Metroid:Other M and Golden eye, but with the recent typhoon of
updates on those discs, I'd rather want to know whats safe and what's not.

Yes, all current updates are safe as long as you have the latest HBC.

Does HBC update automatically as new game updates come out? cause the last update i downloaded was a while back, after Mario Galaxy 2 I think.

Games don't have "new" updates, they have updates that were available online a while ago (by now probably the latest online updates). So HBC only gets updated when there is an actual new update i.e. a new online update.
