Using Smashstack but it won't work

I followed the instructions to perform a SmashStack. Everytime I reach the stage builder, the Wii freezes and a noise comes out.

1. I copied my Smash folder
2. Renamed it "privateold"
3. copied the Smashstack exploit to the root of the SD card
4. copied the hackmii from the hackmii to the root of the SD card

I also formatted the SD card to FAT and it is not SDHC.

Am I doing something wrong? I have menu system 4.3.

Did you make sure there are no sample stages left on the Wii?

Yes I did! My Wii still froze.
