Broken Wii Modding

I recently got a semi broken wii from a friend. Only thing that is broken is the Disk Drive. Friend sent it in to be repaired as it was still under warrenty but it was softmodded before and Nintendo said they wernt going to fix it. Nintendo also must have restored the software because there is no mod on it.

My question is can I softmod a Wii without a working Disk Drive?

You can install the Homebrew channel using letterbomb without a working drive, yes. Although as I understand it, the disc drive is one of the simpler parts to replace if you want to get a fully working wii again.
