Problems Reading DVD R following system 4.1 update
July 27, 2009 11:17AM
EDIT TO ADD MUCH MORE DETAILS:

Hi Guys, not sure if this is the right place to be posting about this, but if not could you point me in the right direction please?

I have a PAL wii, bought 10 months ago and chipped with D2Pro.
I recently updated to 4.1 from 3.3E and have had a couple of problems.

Firstly, the SD card was wiped. I don't know if this is normal behaviour but I managed to recover the entire file structure so not too bothered.

More concerning is that my homebrew apps no longer read DVD. I had a DVD I was using with SNES9x GX and FCE Ultra GX but now I just get "Invalid DVD" message after hearing the drive spin up.
I have DVDx installed and have tried removing and then reinstalling this from the bootmii installation app. Still no joy.
Also tried a newly burned DVD. This didn't work.
The disc I was using originally has not become scratched or anything of the sort as it hasn't been taken out of the Wii for many months (USB for my Wii games)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Or any more ideas for how to troubleshoot?

Any help would be great.
Thanks
CIsor

MUCH MORE DETAILS:
I've tried removing DVDx using the BootMii installer. Still broken
Tried reinstalling through BootMii nistaller. Still Broken.
Tried burning a new DVD. Still broken.

The system update blanked my SD card. I restored this on the PC.
The ROMS DVD I had worked fine before the update.
Original Gamecube and Wii discs work fine. Backup Wii discs also work fine.
I have the Homebrew Channel installed which I installed using Twilight Hack.
I have BootMii installed as Boot2 but didn't really understand what it was for so didn't make a NAND dump prior to the update.
I have DVDx installed.
The Wii is chipped with D2Pro 9 wire.

All I can say is I can load roms off a DVD on 4.1 without a modchip (with DVDx installed) so it might be the chip

Try it wthout DVDx!

Thanks for the quick replies.

I will give it a go without DVDx installed.

I don't think it's the modchip, but to be honest I haven't tried it with an original disc for ages as they are all packed in the garage since moving house.

Can anyone suggest any other applications which should be able to read from DVD file system which I could use to test? Maybe it's just the emulators as I understand they have the same cdebase for file access etc and maybe it's just an issue with my setup?

Anybody heard of this sort of issue before?

No luck with removing DVDx. Also tried reinstalling from the boot mii installation again but it's not working.
Tried an original gamecube disc last night. Mario sunshine worked fine.

I also tried Mplayer and geexbox. Both attempt to read DVD and spin up the disc but fail. They don't give any error message.

Any further suggestions from anyone out there?

I doubt it's the modchip. When I was having issues, everyone said that it was probably my D2PRO9. From what I've learned since then, it seems that having a chip only gives you problems when attempting to install DVDx through some of the old methods. Once you have it installed you should be fine. When you had it installed before, was it installed through the DVDx installer or the HackMii installer?

I didn't think the chip was likely to be the culprit. Glad someone else thinks so too.

Thinking about it a little more now, I'm only 70% sure DVDx was installed previously. Would my drive chip have completely negated the need for this?

I think I remember seeing that it was already there when I installed BootMii* for the first time. So I think I would have used the DVDx Installer off the Homebrew Browser (and from there in HBC).

I have since removed/reinstalled using the BootMii* installer. And also using the DVDx Installer (though I think that might have done more harm than good at my SysMenu revision)

* is that the same thing as HackMii? I'm thinking of the app with the 4 boxes which comes up on boot, allows system menu, HBC or NAND dump/restore. Are we talking about the same thing?
