crash when launching internet using apps

so today i wanted to download some cheats for SSBB, the kind that lets you play the masterpieces with no time, when open the menu, i select the PAL option. then it says "downloading..." on the screen. the whole thing freezes here and i cant even quit the app. i have to restart the wii! then i went into the homebrew browser to see if there was an update i missed....... but i got an error there too!
these errors only seem to happen when the app attempts to access the internet through my wi-fi connection.
it is very anoying and i can hardly do anything on my homebrew now!

Homebrew Channel has a known issue that locks the Wii randomly. I heard it has something to do with WiiConnect24 on. Turn it off temporarily until you download said codes.

and how would i go about turning off connect24?

You could probably find that out in the Wii's instruction manual.
