Can it download files to an SD(HC) card or to a USB drive?

Dunno, I haven't tried it (yet).

Wow, this sounds really cool. I'm downloading NOW (although is very unlikely this thing runs smooth...)

EDIT: hmmm, I need a USB keyboard... Well, comes easy, goes easier :P

does it come with a GUI built in? Or do you have to download it?

GUI is built in

I'm guessing this doesn't work over WiFi though, which sort of tempered my enthusiasm. But hopefully someone will be able to reverse engineer the broadcom drivers for Wii Linux, although I realize it's going to be hard since the Wii is PPC and there probably aren't any PPC based computers with this wifi chipset.

grr... I'm trying to get it on my SD card, when all of the sudden the FAT16 filesystem became readonly... AGAIN!!!! This is a hacking community, so does anyone know how to bypass the readonlyness of a filesystem? Is there some kind of Filebrowser that will do that?
EDIT:Okay, use partition manager's disk check. It's fixed, now. However, I can't figure out how to label a filesystem?

I wonder if it's possible to load the Internet Channel and patch its file type handling to allow for downloading?

As for Flash, is there a PPC version at all? If not then it might be difficult to get even a homebrew browser to support it.

Mac runs Flash 9, and Macs run on a PPC architecture. I see no reason that it wouldn't, other than OS dependency, of course.

I've been waiting for a version of the Internet Channel that can download files FOREVER.

Macs haven't been PPC based since 2005 or so though.

Also, I've got finals currently but once they're over I've got a month to kill, and I'm planning on learning more C(++) and homebrew so I can write an RSS reader. I'll probably make a bare-bones file downloader first, just to see how it's done. Hopefully it's somewhat similar to the way it's done in Java but there are a few examples of how to do it so possibly by the end of the month I hope to at least have the file downloading bit done. I guess parsing RSS is somewhat similar to parsing HTML, but I doubt I will get that far since all my projects have a habit of not getting finished :(.

RAM requirment maybe, availability of the sourcecode certainly

generally, there is quite always a good reason ;-)
