Defective disc drive.
March 07, 2010 07:05PM
The CD drive on my wii is not working properly. I had a bit of an accident with my wii and I believe it has caused my system to not read certain discs. How would I remove homebrew channel and any other traces of homebrew e.g. custom IOS or whatever? Please help as I am already in the process of sending my wii in for repairs. I just need to make sure its all clean etc. Thank you very much.

Ive read in various places that the game Wii Fit Plus needs to have system menu 4.2 in order to work. I still have mine at 3.2 or 3.4 I believe with homebrew installed and all my channels and what not are updated. Should my system be giving a "can't read disc error?" Please help.

To remove all traces, I think you could:

1.) Launch Dop IOS MOD through the HBC, and install the newest versions of all IOSs without patches.
2.) Load the hackmii installer, and uninstall the HBC, etc.

OK thanks. I will give that a try. If anyone else has suggestions I would be grateful for any insight.

Thanks again dude.

2.) Load the hackmii installer, and uninstall the HBC, etc.

Additionally, you must delete all custom channels and cIOSes if you have them. This should be done with AnyTitle Deleter. Also, check your play log. If any homebrew is listed there (custom channels if you have them, the Homebrew Channel if you ever launched official games or channels through homebrew launched from the Homebrew Channel) you must delete your play log. Formatting the wii should delete this. There could be a better way to do this, but I'm not aware of it.

If your wii is old enough to install Bootmii as boot2, I recommend that you make a NAND backup before deleting anything. Then, after getting your wii back, you can reinstall Bootmii and restore the NAND backup, restoring everything to the way it is now.

OK thanks. I will start on all this as soon as I can. Does wii fit by any chance need a 4.2 update? It worked with my wii once and then after that it didn't. I may have to ask how to make a NAND backup if I come up stuck when I go to do all this.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Oh no. I updated to 4.2 and put the homebrew channel on and everything. Wii Fit Plus worked the first few times I tried it then it stopped :(

Anyway, I am a little confused on how to use anytitle deleter because I am afraid to delete the wrong ios. I have no idea which ios is which to be honest and I am not sure how to tell the difference. Sorry. Also, I tried IOS Mod and I guess I downgraded/updgraded, who knows lol, without patching like I was told. I honestly thought wii fit was working with system menu 4.2 but I guess not. This is terrible.

Anyway, I will at least delete homebrew channel, dvdx, and bootmii again and hope for the best, otherwise it looks like I'll be buying a new console. Thanks for you help and any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever install cIOSes or custom channels (other than the Homebrew Channel)? If not, you certainly don't need to delete them. Check the Hackmii Installer log. It is on the root of your SD card and is called installer.log or something like that. It lists all the IOSes on your wii. After the version number of each IOS, there is either a period (.), which means that the IOS is unmodified, or an asterisk (*), which means that that IOS was patched. If none of the IOSes are patched, you don't need to do anything to them. If you have cIOS (asterisk in the Hackmii Installer log) 202, 222, 223, 224, 249, or 250, simply delete it. If you have patched IOSes in lower slots, you need to replace them with unmodified IOSes, which you can do with Dop-Mii.

Other than that, make sure that no homebrew appears in the play log. If you installed anything else, you should mention it so someone can tell you how to delete it. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any issues.

OK I will check all that and I appreciate all the help I really do. I hope I can get my wii fixed soon :)

p.s. I think I understand everything except what lower slots is. I think I'm really good otherwise. Sorry for being a noob. I am just trying not to take any risks with my system.

Also, I did play around with CIos a few weeks ago but have no idea whats on there. I was trying to install wads. Just so I don't leave people in the dark.

What I mean is if you have a patched IOS lower than the common cIOSes (202 is the lowest) it probably belongs on your wii, but in unpatched form. You would need reinstall it without patches.

You will have to check your Hackmii Installer log to find out. Alternately, you may be able to use Dop-Mii to scan your wii. However, I don't have any experience with that since it gives me a code dump whenever I try it.

I was trying to install wads.

What you need to do to remove them depends on the sort of WADs you installed. Assuming the WADs are legal, I can explain how to remove them if you tell me what they are. If you installed illegal WADs, please leave. We don't support those here.

Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 04:18AM
Run Dop-Mii, have it run on IOS 36, and install the latest stub IOS 254 and the latest version of IOS 36 without patches. You must also delete any WADs you installed except IOS and system menu WADs. This must be done with AnyTitle Deleter, since deleting custom channels in data management does not remove all traces of them (this must be done before reinstalling IOS 36, or it won't work).
Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 04:18AM
I don't have the wads on my system. I was testing them out to see if it was possible for my wii to accept them but I have no interest in them currently soooo...

I just want to get my wii to its original state and am having a hard time. I have only ever used the homebrew channel for the most part and was only experimenting with custom ios to see how they worked and what not. Please help.

jlenoconel

p.s. I tried deleting those particular files and it wouldn't let me so I'm not sure what to do about that. Are Nintendo really likely to notice this anyway? That I have like two files that may be custom IOS. This is frustrating. It not your fault on here, its just my wii being a pain. I don't want to end up deleting something and it brick my wii. I will try a few other things and see what my results are. Thanks again.

OK so this is the log I have now and I see no asterix. I was about to end up deleting system file menus but it came up with an error so I think it didn't do it :s I guess if something is wrong I can always send it back if it becomes bricked. I am guessing no asterix means success. I hope so because this is a bloody nightmare. Thanks guys.
Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 04:42AM
As long as there is no mention of the Homebrew Channel in the play log, you are done. Your wii has no more traces of homebrew.
Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 04:47AM
OK thank Christ lol. I appreciate the help. I am going to delete the homebrew channel as soon as I get the box to ship the system back. One more question. Do Nintendo really "repair" the wii or do they just send you a new one? I have heard a rumor of just sending a new one.

p.s. I am never installing another CIos again.
Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 01:58PM
Depends on the repair. If it's a drive failure, they replace the drive. Not sure what they do about Bluetooth modules. For anything else, they probably send you a new Wii/replace the board.
Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 03:43PM
OK. I noticed a few weeks a go I had a single "system files corrupted" when I turned the system off at an improper time or something, but have not had it since. Should I be concerned about this? I think for the most part it is the drive because Ive been looking after this dog at my house and he's still a puppy and ended up knocking my wii on the ground, from a medium/high height. Obviously Wii Fit is the first game I have had problems with so obviously I don't know if there was a problem before. I'll let them fix the system. I told them I've been having problems with the colors on my screen too which is true so hopefully they will replace the system. We will see. Thanks again.
Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 11:03PM
The "System files corrupted" error, if it doesn't reoccur frequently, is basically meaningless.

Re: Defective disc drive.
March 09, 2010 11:33PM
OK so I guess it is the disc drive then, or do you mean that it's meaningless to Nintendo??? I am still waiting for the box to send it back but nothing so far.

Chweers,

James.
