Playing Movies From a Portable Hard Drive

I was wondering if there is a app that can play movies safely off my hard drive. Currently I have a 500gb external hard drive with about 350 movies on it in .avi format. I ussually use my ps3 to play these. I am wondering if the wii will do the same?

geexbox will play them fine....
it just depends what you have teh drive formatted as. if you have it formatted as fat it will also work on mplayer.
