Please read through this before asking someone "What is (insert word here)? What does it do?"

If you cannot find what you want here, look here. that is the (pseudo)official glossary.

Wii Executables:
Wii Executables are the equivalent of .exe for Windows or .app for Mac. They end in either .dol or .elf. there is no "better" format between the two. They can be found either on Wiibrew or the Homebrew Browser. If you found it elsewhere, it is more than likely unsupported. Ask here.
NOTE: Gamecube executables also end in .dol. It is difficult to load these.

Twilight hack:
A modified save file for Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii). It requires Twilight Princess (Wii) to run. It can load a Wii Executable on the SD card. The Executable has to be named "boot.elf" or "boot.dol" and be in the root (not in any folders). DO NOT rename the file extension. (.dol/.elf) It is commonly used to run Loadmii or the Hackmii Installer. I couldn't find a tutorial on this yet, but watch this space.

Bannerbomb:
A modified channel. It doesn't require any games to run. It can load a Wii Executable on the SD card. The Executable has to be named "boot.elf" or "boot.dol" and be in the root (not in any folders). DO NOT rename the file extension. (.dol/.elf) It is commonly used to run Loadmii or the Hackmii Installer. There is a tutorial HERE
NOTE. The above tutorial only Uses the Hackmii Installer. If you wish to use Loadmii do not do steps 2-4. Instead, download Loadmii, and copy the Boot.dol to the root of the SD card. Please note that you can run the Hackmii Installler through Loadmii. We HIGHLY reccomend you use the Hackmii Installer. Loadmii is for the paranoid, as it doesn't touch the Internal memory.

Hackmii Installer:
An All In One installer through which you can install:
The Homebrew Channel: a channel through which you can run Wii Executables
DVDx: a hidden channel which removes the "Barrier" to the Drive, allowing you to play DVD's. Often used with MPlayer CE
Bootmii: a Beta "still under construction" application, that allows us to FULLY unlock the Wii's hardware. Install this to Boot2 if you can. otherwise, give it a miss. It can Backup your Wii Internal Memory "NAND" in case a fatal error occurs.

Loadmii:
a Wii Executable that can load other Wii Executables from USB and SD. It doesn't affect the Wii Internal memory, but the apps that you load might.

Homebrew Channel:
The NO.1 app for loading Wii Executables. It is Self Updating, User Friendly and supports SD and USB. It loads its executables from the "apps" folder on SD, or alternatively on the USB. There is a video of an already very old version here. The newest version (1.0.3) is MUCH better.

DVDx:
An "invisible" channel that removes the "barrier" to the DVD drive. Before DVDx you could only run Wii and GC discs. It allows playing of DVDs through MPlayer CE. Just having DVDx isn't enough to play DVDs. It also lets you run a variety of other apps.

To fully understand what Bootmii is, you need to need to know what an IOS is.

IOS:
One of many stored inside the Wii. The Wii has two proceessers (Brains, if you will). "Normal" software runs on one (games, Wii menu, homebrew), IOS on the other. What ever you do on the Wii, goes through IOS. There are several IOS on the Wii. (Last time I checked there were about 30) The only time IOS doen't run is when you're turning on the Wii, In Gamecube mode or running Bootmii.

Bootmii:
An app that gives us full control over the Wii. It can either be "cut" into the Boot process (Boot2) or given it's own IOS (IOS) It is a "stub" that looks on the SD card for two files: "armboot.bin" and "ppcboot.bin". These are in the "Bootmii" folder on the SD. If it finds them it loads them. if not, it just falls back to the Wii menu. Once these files are loaded, It lets you Backup your Wii Internal Memory (NAND), Restore it, and quickly access the Homebrew Channel. It is reccommended that you use Bootmii configuration editor to autoboot to the System menu. Wii remotes don't work in Bootmii. Alternatively, use a GC controller or the Powwer and Reset buttons.

MINI:
Bootmii's replacement for IOS. Is short for "Mini Is Not Ios". As every piece of homebrew so far goes through IOS, being "freed" from it will really benifit homebrew. It can be specifically written for speical purposes (like running Linux, a free alternative to Windows or Mac OSX) Please note that apps designed for MINI will not work on IOS and vice versa. THE ONLY MINI APPS ARE DEMOS CURRENTLY.IF YOU'RE BRICKED BUT HAVE BOOTMII YOU CANOT RUN "NORMAL" HOMEBREW APPS THROUGH BOOTMII.

cIOS:
A modified version of an IOS, often used for piracy and not supported here. However, some (Patchmii, cIOSUSB2) are supported here. This will more often than not be installed as an existing IOS. However some install to EVERY IOS, which can seriously mess with your Wii.

Gamecube Mode (BC & MIOS):
Gamecube games on the Wii do not run under IOS; they run under MIOS. MIOS is not directly loaded by the menu, or any homebrew loaders; it is loaded by BC. this makes the main processer (brain of the wii) run at Gamecube speed. BC runs A section of the Boot process, which runs MIOS.

Fakesign Bug (Trucha Bug):
A bug in some IOS that alowed Installing Non-Nintendo channels and Non-Nintendo or edited games. this has been fixed in later versions of wii software (partial fix on 3.3v1, full on 3.3v2). However, because some people are awesome, we can still install The Homebrew Channel.

Title/Ticket/TMD:
a Title is a (Pseudo)File on the Wii. it could be a save, a Channel, downloadable content, an IOS or the menu itself. the Title is encrypted; the Ticket is needed to decrypt it. When you copy a Title to SD, ONLY the Title is copyed. This is why you cannot transfer VC/WW games from one Wii to another.when you delete a VC/WW game, only the title is deleted. The Ticket remains, and that is how the Wii Shop tells if you've previously bought the game. ANYTITLE DELETER DELETES BOTH THE TITLE AND TICKET. DO NOT USE IT ON A VC/WW GAME. The TMD is the information about the Title, e.g. version number, name.

Brick:
A wii that wil not function correctly. It may have a problem at boot (Black screen, Freeze at health warning, Opera style error message, "system files are corrupted"), or cannot access the settings menu. (opera style error screen.) if you're bricked and don't have bootmii, turn here otherwise, go here

I wil now go through some apps:

Gecko OS:
Allows Region Free booting of games (play US games before they come out where you live!), Allows Cheat Codes through the built in "Ocarina" engine, Allows Reloading Wii menu with Hacks (copy uncopiable save files, etc.), allows loading WW/VC with Cheat Codes. Very Good app.

MPlayer CE:
Can load media through SD, DVD (including DVD video), USB and SMB shares. Turn your Wii into a media center!

Homebrew Browser:
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH HOMEBREW CHANNEL
Downloads new apps to the SD card through tthe internet.no need to pul the SD card out of the Wii. it telss you when new updates are available to itself and the apps. No fuss Homebrew!

Snes9x GX, FCE Ultra GX, Visual Boy Advance GX:
Emulators for SNES, NES and the Game Boy seris respectivley. You can play all the old Games you've got up in the attic on your TV once again! Snes9x GX even supports cheats.

PLEASE before posting here READ THE FORUM RULES! as a rule of thumb, if it helps pirates, it's against the rules. see here don't post there.
