Adding modchips to your Wii voids the warranty.
Does adding the homebrew channel do the same?

But who needs warranties when you can buy a new Wii for just a few bucks extra than what Nintendo would charge you if they find traces of an uninstalled HBC after sending your Wii in to them?

Yes [hackmii.com]

Unless there is solid proof, take it whitch a grain of salt.

You are comparing it to a normal repair. If the Wii is covered by Nintendos Guarantee, you are only charged for shipping and handling.

Yeah, but let me quote what the author of that blog stated: "...but I see “…. Softwarehack … EUR 210?. That seems awfully excessive, given that the price of a new Wii is EUR 250, no?"

And, according to an e-mail the author received: "...This change is confirmed by NOE President...Whenever you get a console for Repairs and find a Homebrew channel or any other not official Nintendo or unauthorized software (Backup Channel, Gecko OS, etc). on it, this repair is out of warranty. If the defect is related to the modication or not, is of no interest for us, anytime we find unauthorized software, it is out of warranty." So now it's out of warranty.

And the final blow (to your wallet): "Please note the price will be higher for such a Repair as well, as soon as it is fixed. Approx 18O€-21O€..." If this doesn't scream voided warranty or jacked-up price, then I don't know what does...

Of course, the invoice could be based on an isolated incident. Additionally, the anonymous e-mail could be forgery or a scare tactic from some random HBC-hater or something. It basically go back to what you originally said about taking this with a grain of salt.

To get it clear:
The Wii's warranty is a service set up by Nintendo. Nintendo can decide what is covered by the warranty at will.
If they decide, that your Wii is covered by their warranty you will only pay for shipping and handling.

If it is outside of the warranty (i.e.: older than a year), Nintendo offers a normal repair (as of now: for Wii: 70,00 EUR)

The Hackmii post only applies to the later case:
Nintendo decided that software modifications out rules a Wii for being covered under the warranty.
Additionally they decided to charge extra money, if they find a software hack.

Right, which would make this case anything but a normal repair...
