It's a replacement for boot2.

It's loaded before the system menu and all the IOSs are loaded which means that even if you mess up the system menu and the necessary IOSs bootmii can still load .dols from the SD and through that reinstall the correct system menu and IOSs. It also has a function for backing up your NAND, which allows you to completely restore your Wiis software to a previous state. (Everything except boot1 is restored, I think, not sure though.)

Because of this, a Wii with bootmii installed is very close to unbrickable!

It surely can do much other things which I don't know about as I haven't tried it myself yet.

Read about it at hackmii for more information.

It allows you to have control of the Wii almost as soon as it is switched on, i.e. before the system menu is loaded. It is loaded before even preloader, so is a lower-level hack than that. At the moment, its functions are not that exciting for the casual homebrew user: it can boot directly to the HBC, bypassing the system menu; there is a NAND backup/restore utitlity as well. Both of these represent useful counter-brick utilities.

However, at the moment it is still in its early stages: eventually it will lead to far more powerful tools and applications. Most importantly, it represents a way towards independence from Nintendo software and IOSes, and more fundamental control over the Wii.

You don't need the homebrew channel to run the installer (Bannerbomb works, too), but if you are not able to install it as a boot2 hack, then you will need the HBC to run it as an IOS.

okay so it works with the bannerbomb.

and i just put the boot.elf / boot.dol file on the root of the sd card is that correct?

Don't install Bootmii unless you truly understand what it is, what it does, and the pros and cons of having it installed as well as the risks of installing it. I apologize if I sound pessimistic, Bootmii is a truly great program and I think everyone should install it. However, I don't want to see anyone rush into it unknowingly.

yes you can use the Hackmii installer to install The Homebrew Channel, dvdx, or bootmii in any combination you'd like. If you don't want to mess with boot2 yet, then skip bootmii and just do HBC.

yes the installer will load HBC onto the Wii Menu, I'm pretty sure that Anytitle Deleter can get rid of it for you in the offhanded chance you need to send your Wii in for repair and you don't wanna risk getting charged for a softmodded wii.

Before I respond to this, I need to know if you are talking about the Hackmii Installer or Bootmii. (I'm assuming Bootmii but Kage's post is all about the Hackmii installer so I just want to be sure...)

i am trying to figure out how to add codes to the ocarina app,
but it wont even run.
all i have is the ocarina app do i need more files to run it?
such as usb gecko?
and i dont get how to add codes using the code mngr,
all i wanna use it the stage builder ones, thats it.
I think the readmes of the apps detail how to do this. You should read them.
