Basically, your Wii was manufactured after Nintendo changed boot1 to disable the exploit which allows BootMii to be installed as boot2. boot1 and boot2 are pieces of code which run first when you turn on the Wii, and the BootMii as boot2 installer modifies part of this code to make it load BootMii on boot if certain files are present on the SD card. In other words, you can't install BootMii in the way it was originally intended to be installed.

Installing as BootMii as IOS means that you can only access it via the Homebrew Channel's Home menu (press home, and an option to load BootMii will be listed). Therefore, its brick prevention powers are greatly weakened - you can use the NAND backup/restore feature, but if your Wii gets bricked, you'll still need to be able to load the HBC (via Preloader, most likely) in order to perform a restore.

At the moment, IOS BootMii is not that useful. However, the low-level hardware access which BootMii provides means that new homebrew will eventually start popping up which takes advantage of this. When this day comes, BootMii as IOS will be more useful.

Basically, when you turn your wii on there is a bug that lets you run Bootmii on startup (called Bootmii/Boot2) . The newer Wiis Have fixed this bug. There is a way of running bootmii on any Wii Just not on startup. This is Bootmii/IOS. In this form it is nearly useless for you. However, there IS a way of running bootmii on startup that will be availible in the near future. This is bootmii as Sys menu IOS. Just be paitient.

thankyou both, so for now at least it would be better to just install the homebrew channel and sit tight for the better way to run bootmii before installing?

Sure. However, if you choose to install BootMii as an IOS, you can still backup your NAND and uninstall BootMii at a later date.
