Dvix playable off of Data DVD?

Just curious why this isn't possible. I see at one point, in late 2008, some created an unofficial version of another media player that could read off of Data DVD allowing Divx off of DVD possible. I'm wondering why such a feature hasn't been added to any of the current media players since? Or is there and I just couldn't find it at all? All I found was dead links to the unofficial copy as well as others discussing using file share off of a networked PC. If the file share is the best/only option would someone be kind enough to link me to the best place for that?

Certain wii's after a certain date couldn't read dvd's, they changed the disc drive so it wouldn't read movies but only legit original games.
