I can borrow the Zelda game for a short time. Can I play the game once - with a blank formatted SD card in the Wii, and then not need it again? In other words, can I return the game before downloading the homebrew files, etc.

no, you need it just long enough to run the hack... doesn't take long though...

You really only need the game for 15 minutes if you have all the files on your SD card set up properly beforehand.
