Question about ios58
August 14, 2010 11:05AM
Hello, I'm on system menu 4.0u and I have some patched ios and ios202 installed and number of other unmentionable ios. I also have HBC 1.0.6 and do not want to update it due to...Issues I've been hearing and reading about. Anyway my question is will I still gain the benefits of ios58 even with the above specs? If so then what apps does ios58 provide 2.0 speed to?

IOS58 is not used by HBC (yet) and any app which uses it does so independently of HBC, so your HBC version doesn't matter in the slightest ATM. Currently, DOSBox Wii and Super Mario War Wii are the only apps to use IOS58 AFAIK. But most of Tantric's apps (which previously used IOS202 for USB 2.0) will be receiving updates to use IOS58 instead. And probably most others that have USB 2.0 access too, e.g. WiiXplorer. The latest SVN code of libogc uses IOS58 for USB stuff automatically, so in future any app that has USB support will probably have 2.0 speeds if IOS58 is installed, and 1.1 speeds if it isn't.

As you know, HBC 1.0.8 implemented IOS58 support for USB 2.0.

I can also tell you that even when Tantric's applications make use of IOS58 independently of the HBC version you use, there are other applications such as ScummVM which do not reload IOS when launched, so if you want to have USB 2.0 speeds on them you must launch them from HBC 1.0.8 running on IOS58.

So my recommendation is that you get IOS58, either by Tantric's installer or full 4.3 update, and then upgrade to HBC 1.0.8 to make sure that all apps enhanced for IOS58 make use of it.

It doesn't need to, but if you want USB2.0 support then yes.
