Yes, you need the Wii version. GC version does not have access to the Wii hardware, therefore cannot be used for this.

I'm a newbie, so please don't reprimand me. Must I buy or rent the Zelda game for the Wii and play it before I can modify my console's software? Is there away around this? Is everything else available for free?

Yes, you need to at least rent the game long enough to install the homebrew channel. There is no way around this (at least not unless you have a modchip installed). Everything else is available for free and may be found on wiibrew.
