Wiiconnect

I'm very sorry if this is in the wrong topic but what exactly does the WiiConnect app do? I was looking into it for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Goldeneye 007.

Its not an app. WiiConnect is a service built into the System Menu on the Wii, which connects to Nintendo's servers when the Wii is in standby mode. It lets you receive mail while your Wii isn't on. So you can get messages from friends, or alerts to updates and competitions from Nintendo. It doesn't really have anything to do with Brawl or Goldeneye.

WiiConnect24 is the above. The WiiConnect app is something entirely different and has nothing to do with games.

I know what WiiConnect is but what does the app do? I really don't wanna brick my Wii if I download it.
