If it was a disc read error it would likely show a message on the screen. This sounds more like a missing/corrupt IOS.by tueidj - Homebrew General
MPEG2 video licensing fees are around $2 per unit, I'm not sure off-hand what the costs are for MPEG audio, AC3 and DTS (all of which are required for full DVD support) but they would be similar. Plus there are some weird requirements for DVD playback certification such as mandatory digital audio output which the wii doesn't have hardware for (ironically the gamecube did but didn'tby tueidj - Feedback & Support

To improve speed you can overlap your I/O i.e. perform reading at the same time as other processing. See Cleanrip for example (http://code.google.com/p/cleanrip/source/browse/trunk/source/main.c#66), it uses a seperate writer thread to perform reading and writing at the same time.by tueidj - Coding

When bad sectors start showing up in chkdsk, it's time to get a new HDD. There are always a bunch of spare sectors set aside for bad block remapping, normally you won't know about any bad blocks until those run out (unless you query the SMART statistics) so the fact that you're seeing them means the drive is in serious trouble and will likely get worse.by tueidj - Feedback & Support
